You could call it senility but it’s also completely in character: lie, make shit up, and take no responsibility for anything, including and especially things he’s directly done.
That's why I don't like it when people say he's got dementia. Like... No, he's just a liar and a gaslighter. He's always been a liar.
He's all those things and has dementia.
I genuinely think people who say he has dementia are coping to ignore the possibility that someone can be that hypocritical, lie that much, and still face no consequences whatsoever.
Experts have studied his speech patterns and he's clearly going downhill fast.

The petty theft of the FIFA medals is also a pretty clear sign of dementia. It's classic dementia behavior and it would be overanalyzing to call it anything else.
Yeah, and he is taking the whole country with him.
His statements here reveal something we probably knew: that he didn’t actually review the candidates and make the appointment decision himself. He just rubber stamped the recommendation he was given. So in his mind, it WAS something someone else did. Of course that’s ignoring his responsibility once he signs on. But that’s Trump for you. Take all credit, distribute all blame.
He's totally unqualified to evaluate candidates for this role, he doesn't even know what the federal reserve does and why it's important.
A malignant narcissist never lives in reality anyway, this just becomes more apparent with age.
EDIT:
Well, the first half of that isn't totally true, if they can grow a sufficient cult of personality, turn a good chunk of the world into a sycophantic hugbox for them.
These usually collapse as they go truly senile or incredibly delusional... or they functionally become the figurehead of a persistent cult or religion.
