This is on one of my mother's maples. What is it and what should she do about it?

And by a while ago, I mean 2017, but I just stumbled upon it and remembered no one ever was able to identify it for me back then.
Edit: Forgot to say this is Indiana, USA.

About a year ago and this was just a couple of leaves that a storm washed out on the driveway. It's been sitting in a pot ever since, now over a metre long and with flowers. Can anyone ID please? (Australia, near Sydney- doesn't look native to me though)

I bought this plant at a flea market this weekend in Central Virginia, USA. I'm not sure what it is, however, and I want to make sure to take proper care of it. I was hoping you all could help. Thanks so much!
