A Boring Dystopia

Columbia University has capitulated to Trump Administration demands in order to secure federal funding. The major concessions are as follows. 

> Columbia will ban masks on campus during protests.

> The University will hire 36 more on campus police officers.

> The Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Departments will be placed under Academic Receivership for 5 years, meaning the departments will be run by an outside group while the existing staff will be put under their control.

> The University will adopt a "position of institutional neutrality".

> The University will hire more Jewish academics for its Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies in order to counter balance pro-Palestinian staff.

President Donald Trump suggested Friday that people found guilty of attacking Tesla properties could serve their sentences in El Salvador prisons, sharply ramping up his rhetoric in defense of Elon Musk’s company amid an intensifying backlash.

The president’s threat on Truth Social added to his administration’s increasingly vocal support for Musk, the billionaire and Trump megadonor who is now leading the divisive government-slashing DOGE initiative.

“I look forward to watching the sick terrorist thugs get 20 year jail sentences for what they are doing to Elon Musk and Tesla,” Trump wrote in the social media post Friday morning.

“Perhaps they could serve them in the prisons of El Salvador, which have become so recently famous for such lovely conditions!” he wrote, referring to his administration’s controversial deportation of alleged gang members.

We’re still in shock. My eight-year-old daughter can no longer sleep.

I tried to comfort her, to help her sleep, but she kept waking up crying. She told me, “Mama, every time I close my eyes, I feel like another bomb is falling on us.”

I lay beside her to soothe her. This morning, I discovered she had wet herself in fear.

My 12-year-old, Saida, keeps asking me, “Mama, will the planes come back again?” I have no answer for her.

How can I reassure her when I no longer believe I will wake up tomorrow?

I looked into my husband’s weary, burdened eyes and asked him, “When will this nightmare end?” He replied, “We are alone in this world. No one cares.”

Arkansa backwater jails ftw, yet again. If I was going to prison for a long time in Arkansas (or Louisiana), I would commit suicide for sure.
