The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Are there any canonical references to how fast these two are, for comparison?

Like, say, you are a revolutionary who's imprisoned, but you are allowed to write letters to your family. How would you covertly send a message to your fellow revolutionaries that only they can decode? (Your family are on your side will pass the letter along)

Obviously, it cannot appear to contain any obvious ciphertext, since the prison guards would just rip up your letter and not send it.

Playboi Carti’s latest album features a song engineered by a popular AI music creator who has used famous artist’s voice to make songs. Kanye was accused of the same in his latest albums.

I’ve seen comments saying artist should be able to use AI for their own voice because producers don’t actually play the instruments used for songs.

IMO, I disagree seeing as producers are still making the actual song and contributing a large portion to it. An artist using AI, even if it’s their own voice (which they own). Means they’re contributing absolutely nothing to the song other than their written verse. Even worse if they didn’t write it themselves.

Your thoughts?

I'm wondering if I should just delete lemmy to stay under the radar. 🤔 (I'm a US Citizen currently residing in the US, and moving out of the country is not really an option)

I feel so conflicted on this. On one hand, this is kinda like giving in to authoritarianism, but on the other hand, dissenting is kinda dangerous. 😓

I brushed my teeth and then dissolved a zinc tablet in my mouth.

Afterwards I wondered, would the F- ion in the toothpaste combine with the Zn2+ ion in the tablet, which is not very soluble in water, and would neutralize both the teeth hardening and cold-fighting properties?

It says on the zinc bottle not to drink citrus juices but I cannot find any reliable information online that explains why.

How did you guys get your fediverse real-time notifications to work, pushed directly into your phone's notifications section? It seems that at the moment, I am using the Summit app, which claims that it checks every 15 minutes. However, my Summit app doesn't work in real-time, possibly because my phone is old, even though I have turned off battery optimization. Currently, I rely on my email services to receive notifications from my fediverse social accounts.

Where I’m at, the temps flip-flop day to day, even hour to hour. In the morning it’s 35° outside, and by evening it’s 79°. I gave up keeping up with the temps and shut my unit off for the time being.

My question is why can’t HVAC units be programmed to say that if the outside temp reaches n° and the inside temp reaches m° cold, turn on the heat; conversely, if the outside temp rises to n° and the inside temp reaches m°, then turn on the AC?

My thermostat already knows the outside and inside temp, but I still have to manually switch it back and forth. I want a system that I can just set it and forget it all year round.

As investment, I bought this, instead of stocks. Any ideas on what to do with it?

Location:

  • 75km (1hr) to a big international airport. Airport has direct flights to most EU capitals (2-4hr flights)
  • 50km to city center
  • 25km from nearest large residential area (500,000+ population)
  • 5km from massive organized industrial area (government supports factories here)
  • 35km from a rich residential area
  • 1km away from the village (its old and mostly depopulated) and animal husbandry area

Access:

  • There is public transportation, but one has to walk 1.5km after leaving the bus.
  • There is no direct road access to the land. You have to walk like 200m after leaving your car.
  • 1km road to here is non-asphalt and its a bit bumpy ride. When it rains, it gets bad here. It rains rarely

It is quite peaceful and quiet there. You can hear interesting bird sounds sometimes. You see no buildings, no cars and no humans anywhere near you when you're there, which feels great imo. You notice the air quality after you leave your car. I personally absolutely would want to live here for a while

Ideas

  • Trying to clarify this rn, but I think I can make $120-160/yr/decare from leasing the land to a farmer. Land is 25 decares
  • "Unique co-living opportunity with vegan food & yoga sessions" In other words, remote work / digital nomad village for people who want to work REALLY remotely :) I'd have to arrange electricity (solar panels and powerbanks), internet, toilet, shower, water, tents, mattresses/pillows/sheets, food, drinking water. (Though I don't know what people will do when they're bored here? Any ideas? Meditation would get boring after some point)
  • Sadly location isn't touristic, but it is 1hr flight away from extremely touristic areas. One of those areas, a city, was the most visited city in the world a few years ago.
  • I've met a few volunteers and they seemed quite willing to volunteer for whatever I decide to do here (if I do anything). For those unfamiliar: WWOOF and Workaway

Also- Any suggestions on where I should ask this question on the internet?

Why are female characters who can solve things without anyone's help hated, but male characters who are perfect at practically everything are loved?

Batman is an example. Batman is a human being with a brilliant intellect, which is not a problem, but being a human being without powers, he manages to be more intelligent than aliens superior to humans, he manages to be a MASTER in all martial arts and no matter who the opponent is, he is always prepared and can win. Any writer who dares to create a female character with these characteristics would be attacked and called woke

There are many other examples, just watch any Japanese isekai anime. The protagonist dies and is reincarnated in another world with unrealistic powers and abilities. Out of nowhere, the boy who used to just stay at home masturbating and playing games is able to use all the magic and martial arts. Just by being born in another world, the protagonist is able to defeat wizards who have spent centuries training. And even though he has never picked up a sword, he is able to defeat dragons and swordsmen with a single blow

Any writer who dared to create a story with a female protagonist with the same characteristics would be accused of trying to push an ideological agenda and their character would be considered a Marie Sue.

I have composed a piece of written musings on the tools choice in clay sculpting which I put on a display on a public internet forum.

I have received following advice: Go seek therapy.

However upon checking my vaults it has become apparent that they are barren.

What should I do in this situation?

I used to see him all over the place and now nothing. I checked his post history and it’s been 24 days since he last posted anything.

I don’t know the guy or have any personal stake, but seeing someone everywhere just suddenly disappear is odd.

I know the lithium batteries are supposed to be a pain to recycle but how are the conventional ones broken down to recover all the materials?

I have a bucket I throw dead batteries into and picking it up made me realize just how heavy it is. That is a lot of metal. And metal is money.

Yes, the US Marshall Service is part of the Department of Justice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marshals_Service

And, although they operate under the direction of the Attorney General, the following brings up an interesting point:

The Marshals Service serves as the enforcement and security arm of the U.S. federal judiciary

If the court issues an order and the attorney general subsequently refuses to enforce that order, couldn't the court then issue an order placing the attorney general under arrest?

When I was a teenager, I thought people in their 20's were the most attractive. Now that I'm about 40, I still think people in their 20's are the most attractive. It's hard for me to believe that I might ever be attracted to someone past retirement age, even when I'm past retirement age myself, unless the person is like one of those celebrities who look way younger than they are.

This isn't something I can comfortably ask most older people I know, but there's one man who admits that he isn't and one woman who is. Which is more normal?

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way advocating for the spreading of a highly contagious and deadly disease or the abstention from safe and highly effective vaccines. But, this is No Stupid Questions, so…

Measles is known for wiping out your immune system memory and re-endangering you to pathogens you had once successfully fought off.

Allergies are when your immune system misidentifies something harmless (like pollen or peanuts) as a harmful pathogen and triggers an immune response.

So, what happens to allergies in people who get measles? Does it wipe out the immune system’s memory of the allergen? Does it expose them to develop new allergies? Do we even know whether it does anything to allergies at all, or has it never been studied? What about other auto immune diseases?

Secondly, if it does do something, is there some way that it can be utilized to help allergy sufferers? Not in the “give people a deadly contagious disease” kind of way (I’ve heard of the tapeworm thing), but is there something there that could studied and developed into a targeted drug or treatment? Or is the mechanism just too broad and dangerous.

Setting aside Capitalism vs. Communism (or maybe I just think I am), this structure vs. that. Why is it that there aren't really huge lists of alternatives? Where are the people who are imagining new government structures?

Like electing citizens to office at random, like we do with jury duty (forget the word for it). Or totally different arrangements of legislatures. Or even a pure democracy in a modern sense. That one is especially probably a terrible idea, and they're not even that unique, but who is brainstorming this stuff? Is it mostly just sci-fi authors? Where is it talked about that isn't already bending toward a team in the already-existing scheme of things? Even the most radical sorts are referencing back to books/ideas that are a century old. There are ultimately like four ideas and we just kind of gave up? That's all of them?

Why have we seen so few different approaches tried? Or seemingly even imagined? I feel like even in fiction, it'll be 2,000 years in the future and the whole thing is structured like a glorified city council ruling entire star systems. I feel like it's difficult even for our minds to imagine anything truly inventive, in that sense. Is that baked into the concept? Is it because we're just dumb monkeys that only understand "big strong monkey better?" HAS this stuff been written about extensively and I'm just unaware (probably, yes)?

I don't think their arguments are sound because they are trying to combine an originalist viewpoint with a hyper corporate one but in they end are they wrong to recognize cash is king?

Whats the best way to take action for me as a single user? What kind of posts should I focus on making? Ive heard of fetching reddit posts, maybe I could do that if theres like an easy process to do so, I'd happily feed some communities I like with posts from the silicon valley mafia platform to this platform!

Also whats the name of this platform? I registered under feddit org, is the umbrella term called fediverse? Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it? How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?
