Hey all,

I just released minimal_worlds_ii - an album of Game Boy music made entirely with Furnace Tracker. All project files are available through the individual track pages, and all music files are Public Domain / CC0!

If you do like what you hear, worth knowing all other albums on that page are Public Domain, and all of the recent ones also have their source projects available (basically since I got really into FOSS and started structuring my projects in a way that could be easily shared)

Cheers :)

Open source maintenance fee (opensourcemaintenancefee.org)
submitted 1 day ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I saw this some time ago and wasn't really sure how to feel about it. On one hand it's good to make corporations compensate maintainers, but I also don't want to be forced to ask for a fee because my project uses another project that uses this.

PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.

Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform: With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.

If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.

The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!

If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:

hello foss community!

Does anyone here have experience with background video recording apps? Basically an application where I could start or schedule a recording, and it would silently run in the background and collect the feed from camera, microphone, and ideally, GPS too, effectively turning the smartphone into a body camera without giving any sign on the screen that recording is going on. In order to check / finish the process, one would need to explicitly open the app.

Is there anything open-source of this kind? My primary use-case is recording my trips, but it could also be useful for security-sensitive activities. Real-time cloud synchronization would be nice too, but I guess it's not such a necessity.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to run a (potentially eccentric-sounding) concept past the community, and am keen to hear thoughts from all sides. I'm currently designing a fictional positive future world for a project, and I've been giving a lot of thought into how future healthy societies may exist, and their structure - and Open-Source is a key part of this.

Looking at a lot of utopias in Sci Fi (e.g. Star Trek), future technology, while important, is kind of a veneer over the actual fiction which is usually a coherent society aligned with certain cultural values. E.g. Picard explains that in 24th Century, for humanity "the acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves, and the rest of humanity" (3:00). This rests on the assumption that humanity in Star Trek society are driven by those values. Yes they have matter replicators, but as Manu Saadia argues in Trekonomics, even they require society and supply chains to be healthy to actually work for humanity's prospering.

Of all the promising cultural movements in our own real world, Open-Source is consistently the one I come back to as having real humanity-wide empowerment value, and not just centralizing power with a few. However, most people I talk to have never heard of Open-Source, as most of them don't touch code.

I had the idea of my fictional world having a cultural concept called "The Codestream" - which essentially refers to the entirety of Open-Source, but is treated with a sacred (but not divine) respect. For example, a member of this society might say something like "We draw from The Codestream and we give back to it. It gives us, and all peoples, life." This basically means: we take programs, code, forked versions from the Open-Source space, and as a sign of respect, we contribute back to Open-Source. These programs run a huge number of functions that allows our societies to function.

I understand that this might evoke a response in some people (as it did when I first put down the name / idea), especially as it may sound "religious". However, I think it is important to note that many people have argued that post-modern Western society has lost the treatment of anything as sacred, to its detriment. So just trying to stress that I am using the term "sacred" as in "treated with utmost respect", not as in "divine".

SO, I'm basically making this post to ask for people's thoughts / reactions:

  • What is your initial response?

  • Could you see this spreading as a cultural value in our own real world?

  • Is this just a rebranding of Open-Source and entirely unnecessary? Or does giving it the sacred-respect element give it more cultural mobility?

  • Has this already come up in FOSS' 70-yr history?

  • Any other thoughts?

Thanks all for your time :)

Can people share their impression and opinions of using Fedilab app for its functionality and interface? Is the menuing system logical? Any issues navigating around between scrolling through posts and looking for a specific function or setting?

magazine about small web - ELPiS A place of articles, interesting materials and links that I hope be useful for you. This magazine is in continuous development, slowly but surely, and our main goal is to inform and educate. We'll show that there is an alternate path to development, which is not limited to endless upgrades for the sake of the process itself, or to the accumulation of resources without a set goal. This isn't just your average tech mag, but rather an attempt to rethink the approach to creating digital content. While reading, perhaps, someone will think about creating their page, reconsider their views and understand how to organize and fill it best.

https://gitlab.com/christosangel/troblo

troblo is a terminal match-three game, written in Bash.

The aim is to place each time a pair of new tiles with fixed orientation on available empty squares of the 6x6 grid, in order to create rows or columns of three or more matching tiles, which will become empty again.

The new pair of fixed orientation tiles is shown each time at the right side of the grid.

The new pair can be placed only if both selected squares are empty.

The game ends when the grid becomes so clogged with unmatching tiles, and there is no place in the grid to drop the new fixed orientation (horizontal or vertical) pair of tiles.

This game was inspired by https://368chickens.com/.

Hi. Basically, I'm asking for suggestions. Do you know any good note taking app that works on linux desktop? I'm looking for something that I can use instead of Notion or Obsidian, with some nice to have:

  • Open source (that's the reason I'm not that much into Obsidian, it could disappear tomorrow and I could not replace it with a community maintained fork)
  • Markdown based. I'd like to know that I can replace that app for another one when I want, and that's not possible when they use their own obscure format
  • Local. I'm not interested in paying monthly for cloud storage. And actually, I'd prefer to know for certain that nothing leaves my local machine
  • Nice UX. I know that using plain text files and vim might do the job, but I'd like something more user friendly and with nice features (Notion, for example, nails it in my opinion)
  • Bonus: Can also be used on android (I'm aware this is a though one, and is not a deal breaker)

I know that all those requirements are hard to fulfill and I don't even know if something like that exists, so I'd appreciate any kind of suggestion. For example, It'd be great if an open source like that exists, but I'm not completely closed to open-source-ish proprietary apps (e.g. licenses not really open but close enough), as long as they are free to use and work on linux.

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. The most suggested alternative was Joplin so I'll give it a try. However, as most of you mentioned, at the core it's all markdown so I could easily try the other alternatives with the same knowledge base at a later point :)

This is an ongoing community collected list of podcasts in German and English that are available via RSS-feed. The topics are roughly in the subject area “Free Software, Free Society”.

The Website is in German but you will be able to use the list regardless. A handful of podcasts are in English.

https://github.com/positive-intentions/chat

A webapp for P2P E2EE messaging and file transfer. its a fairly unique approach to secure messaging.

the project isnt ready to replace any existing apps or services, but given the competative market for this kind of project, id like to push it out to get feedback.

i made an attempt to create documentation on the website, but otherwise feel free to reach out with questions about how it works.

Note: this project has NOT been audited. It, along with it's source code are provided for testing and demo purposes.

I've been working on building a local music library, I settled on using AIMP as my player of choice because windows media player kinda sucks. However, I'd really like to use something open source if there's any good ones out there. There are some features of AIMP that I'd love to keep, (last.fm scrobbling and podcast subscribing for the most part) but I'm willing to part with them, or even using more than one program instead of having them rolled into one. I've tried a couple alternatives but I wanna know what the community has to recommend!

Hey folks, I’m looking for an open source alternative to Endel. Endel is a “soundscape” app that I use for focused beats and white noise.

I found some free alternatives, but didn’t find any open source options. Wondering if you have any suggestions.

Thanks!

Hey all!

I just came across this a few minutes ago—looks amazing. It’s the only application of its kind I’ve seen that includes text-to-speech out of the box!
