Oh hey it's actually Friday this ti- I mean it's always been Friday never missed a week ~don't look at my post history~

For this one I'd like to mention again that these songs are chosen by shuffling my big unorganized youtube playlist and picking the first 5 that come up, which can cause some emotional whiplash (especially today)(and because last time someone thanked me for curating the list, which I did not).

1: Siinamota - Toriaezu Anataga Inakunarumaeni (TW: suicide)

I really like it, but I like every one of his songs so that doesn't mean much. This one's from his post mortem album "故に。". This album has quite a few songs where he sings himself, and although I haven't looked up the meaning of the lyrics yet, the name of the album implies that its songs are about the reasons for his suicide. For this song specifically, the transition from Miku's voice to his own seems to me like he's finally found his voice in the form of a suicide note, like the only way he could truly express himself was through death, which paints an incredibly depressive picture.

2: Amala - Daidaidaidaidaikirai

I honestly don't like most SynthV (and other AI-) Voicebanks because I think they have too much emotion in their standard tuning which causes them to often not quite fit the song they're in (not rarely because the producer simply got lazy with their tuning upon encountering a voicebank that sounds natural without any work (looking at you Kiichi. His old songs at least had vibes with the default vocaloid tuning sounding inhuman and mysterious, but his latest album just sounds bad in my opinion. \rant) and often sound significantly different from the original (not in this case, Teto still sounds like Teto), but Amala did an incredibly good job tuning both Teto and Miku for this song, especially in the refrain. This is not a genre I listen to often so I don't really have much to say besides that I really like the melody and the animation for the MV is amazing, so good job to Amala and Kurayami Mayoi (animator).

3: Neru - Let's Drop Dead

I think Neru is the master of making Vocarock with "stupid" but also relatable lyrics (although he also has a decent amount of more serious songs). Not much else to say here; A lot of his songs are similar to this and there's nothing I can think of that makes this one stand out among the rest, which is all very good.

4: Harumakigohan - Empurple

I had a phase a few months ago where I really liked his songs but I don't know if I listened to them too much or if my taste just changed since them but nowadays I find them a bit boring. They all kind of follow the same formula, which may sound similar to what I said about Neru, but I think it's worse with Harumakigohan. His tuning is also pretty polarizing since it's pretty high pitched and nasal (just pulling the gender factor all the way down in the editor), and he has stated before that he focuses more on the narrative and the visuals than the music in his songs which may also be a factor in this. I still like his MVs though

5: syudou - Bitter Choco Decoration

Love this one. I don't know why, but low-pitched monotonous Miku always piques my interest, and combined with syudou's complex instrumentals it just always makes for a great song. I think my brain's empty for today because I really can't think of anything more to say about it, so I'll leave it at that before I start writing bullshit again.

See you next Friday! ~(surely I'll be able to keep my schedule twice in a row, right?)~

It's Friday shut up

1: Kikuo - The Cat's Dining Table

This one's pretty far up my list for my favourite Kikuo songs. Similar in vibe to Hole Dwelling, which is probably my favourite of his, this song, like most of Kikuo's songs, is about the trauma-induced feelings of self-doubt often seen in children who've suffered under much too strict, often abusive parents, which is a pretty wide-spread issue all around the world, but especially so in countries with work cultures as toxic and competitive as Japan's. While I personally did not suffer through such things, I still get imposter syndrome pretty often and do wish that I could just disappear from the world and cuddle with a fluffy cat for all eternity

2: sasakure.UK - Our 16bit War

Also very much like this one. It's not a genre I listen to a lot, so I can't really pinpoint what makes this one better than others in this genre, but the lyrics are pretty good and still (and will probably always be) relevant, so up it goes.

Anyways, not Vocaloid, but I've been a bit fixated on the song "Nevermore" from his collab with lasah for the past few days. I also really like his other non-vocaloid stuff but it often flies under the radar since most people only know him for Vocaloid so please go check it out if you like his songs! He really has incredible variety

3: PinocchoP - At the Mercy of Emptyness

Pretty solid, like his other songs. He's an artist I like to have in playlists but not one I'd count among my favourites, as I really like his tuning for Miku and I do really like his songs when I first hear them, but they get a bit boring to me if I listen to them too much. As for this one, I've really got not much to say about it other than the first two words of this paragraph, so I'll leave it at that.

4: cosMo@暴走P - The End of Hatsune Miku

Same situation as PinocchioP, but a bit better. This song (and Album) is a classic and I still always find it incredible whenever I listen to this or "Disappearance of Hatsune Miku" how he managed to make her sound so clear at these speeds. Other than that, I find the melody and lyrics cute, and someone just drove past my home blasting Mongolian (I think) metal at full volume at 11:30pm so I'll just move on to the next one.

5: Picon - ガランド / airhead (I picked this one manually)

Another song I've been fixated on last week so I quickly smuggled this one in so it doesn't take too long for it to get picked by the shuffle algorithm for me to remain interested in it.
I love this one. I think the lyrics capture what happens when I try to think about my thoughts more accurately than any other song I've heard and the monotonous Miku with the freaky autotuned background vocals are me. The guitar part after the refrain sounds like crying that can't be done with either voice and, interpreted in combination with the MV, never does come out no matter how much you want it.
The MV in general fits the vibe of the song perfectly and just yeah. Words left my brain goodbye now

Remember when I said I wanted to try to be on schedule? Anyways I'm taking songs from my shuffle again

1: Hachi - Dune

To put it simply: I like his older stuff more. He's become become a bit too J-Poppy for my tastes, especially after shifting away from Vocaloid with this song being his goodbye song to the community. I still like it, but seeing it as a sign of what's become of him kind of sours my opinion of it a little bit. Getting picked up by Sony didn't do any good for him in terms of creativity. I don't blame him for it, though. Evidently, it worked out for him, and most of his new fans probably don't even know that he used to do Vocaloid stuff.

2: syudou - 死生活 (Shiseikatsu)

Syudou on the other hand is an artist who still does Vocaloid music along with his own singing, and in my opinion he does both exceptionally well. The dark, more muted tuning he uses for Miku really suites his style, even though it's the same style he uses for his own loud, crazy singing. This song is from his first Album, but he's been doing music since long before then and it's already pretty refined by this point.

3: wowaka - Unhappy Refrain

Iconic. Not as popular as Rolling Girl, but just as good in my opinion. I didn't get into Vocaloid until after his death, but I still get sad whenever I hear his music. One of the greatest J-Rock artists of all time. Nothing more to say. Simply amazing.

4: Maretu - White Happy

Maretu's more known for his metal stuff, but this is pretty good too. Not one of my favourite artists, but pretty far up my list. I don't listen to him a lot so I can't really say much here. I find the verses pretty cute (although the lyrics are probably pretty edgy, but I'm too lazy to look that up rn) and the refrain is pretty catchy. I also really like his drums.

5: john / TOOBOE - Higan

Pretty good. Not an artist I consciously listen to a lot, but his work is pretty decent across the board. The instrumental is pretty funky, which is something I really like, but I find the tuning of Miku a bit dull, though I don't really know why it bothers me with this one even though there a a lot of other songs with similar tuning from other artist among my favourites.

Anyways, that's it for today. Not much to say here, but that has less to do with the songs I got and more with the fact that I'm bad at describing music. Here's my Youtube playlist btw if anyone's interested in that. It's mostly reflective of my taste, but I also put in quite a few filler songs and some iconic songs more because they were iconic than because I liked them. I think I'll continue just choosing songs from the shuffle going forward as this makes me have to think less.

I was quite busy today so I’ll just choose the first 5 songs that come up in the shuffle of my big vocaloid playlist

1: Kikuo - Pokkan Colors

Pretty cute. I’ve already said that I like Kikuo in the last post and this is just as good as usual. Not much more to say here that I haven’t already said last week

2: KEMU - Ikasama Life Game

Solid Vocarock. I like the buildup to the guitar solo, the solo itself is pretty good too, and the melody stays catchy throughout the song.

3: Inabakumori - Cooler Girl

Inaba is another artist I really like. Not much I can say about this song, just a very good math-rock (i think) song, which is his specialty. Most of his songs are pretty similar to this, and they’re all very good.

4: r-906 - Muyuubyou Dancer (2021 ver.)

Solid r-906 song. A remake of his very first song, which is a little bit noticeable if you listen to his music more often. It’s definitely one of his more „basic“ songs (not that I know what exactly that means).

5: GonGoss - Smiley X Smiley

Honestly don’t know how this album ended up in my playlist but it’s pretty decent. Finding it outside of my streaming service was a bit difficult because apparently nobody listens to this music, but I was able to find it on VocaDB eventually. I kinda like it, even though I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it. Gives me comfy old-school vibes

That’s it for this week. Writing this has sadly put me over the „Friday Evening“ deadline as it is now 00:10 on Saturday, but I’ll aim to be back on time next week.

As I mentioned last time, I started doing this to encourage discussion in this community, so I’d really appreciate any comments or other posts recommending songs, asking questions, critiquing my taste, or just talking about anything Vocaloid-related.

Gonna try to do this every Friday evening from now on to get some discussion going on here. Not sorted by anything, just 5 songs I want to share and say a few words about.

1: n-buna - ウミユリ海底譚

I came across this a few weeks ago and really liked it. The melody is catchy, the lyrics are relatable in some way that I don’t really understand, the mv is really cute, and that’s all I can say. I’m bad at words.

2: Siinamota - Drug (Drag?) Score

I really liked Siinamota. You’ve likely heard his most famous song „Young Girl A“ (少女A) in one form or another (the Breakcore song „Paranoia“ by Kentenshii uses the refrain as a sample and blew up on TikTok and Youtube), but I really like his entire library. It’s a shame he never really got popular until after his death.

3: r-906 - The Hole

r-906 is one of my favorite producers and this song is how I discovered him. He uses Vocal Synths in ways I rarely see from other producers and he excels at it. Not really much more to say here, just a really nice song.

4: Kikuo - Dust Dust Curse

Kikuo is one of my favorite artists outside of the Vocaloid sphere as well. Incredibly creative and, although some of his older lyrics can be a bit sickening (cough gomenne gomenne cough), they usually tell interesting stories with much room for interpretation, that often ends up being surprisingly relatable (except for said older songs. If you relate to those I seriously worry for your mental and physical wellbeing)

5: Three - Telecaster B Boy

Very nice song. I don’t consider myself trans (!RemindMe 5 years) but I still find the lyrics relatable and the mv cute. It annoys me to see a large portion of the top comments trying to downplay the very obvious trans themes to justify their liking of the song without having to acknowledge their existence.

And that’s it for this week. I’d appreciate any recommendations or just comments in general, I’ve been missing some sense of community in the fandoms I’m in on here. Otherwise, see you next week.
