[email protected] is not a place to file your grievances with "free speech", disrupting users, moderation, etc.

If you have problems with users: File complaints to the mods or just block them.

If you have problems with mods: File complaints with admins of the instance or just migrate to an alternative community.

If you have problems with an entire instance: Just leave it.

It seems like all the biggest comms prohibit posting videos. I'm mostly talking about news, world news, etc. at lemmy.world... What are the biggest comms or instances that allow posting videos? I enjoy reading but I also enjoy watching and posting videos. Thanks!

I love Lemmy (slrpnk.net)

It's brought me joy in life and I've learned so many new things. How cool is it that we get to enjoy all of this cool stuff for free (as in cost) and free (as in freedom)?

That is all. Hope everyone has a nice day.

So I like to call the grouping as the federation but for me it mainly means the things aggregating communities. So the reddit like experience but then there is mastadon which is twitter like. Anyway I often think about the whole thing like going to a bar, or a club, or basically any type of thing where you hang out. You have places you regularly like to hang at which are the subscritpions, you have places you hate and you block those, then you sometimes just go whereever to see whats out there which is like scrolling all. So I was trying to think what mastadon would be like and I was thinking it was like going to someones party because the host is not a group or location so much as an individual. There is no real question here just a musing I felt like sharing.

The latest release of the ActivityPub WordPress plugin introduces new functionality for performing remote follows directly from WordPress. Here's why that's important for the future of WordPress on the Fediverse.

Learned about it thanks to the Fireside Fedi Podcast. Might just end up becoming a new way to find solutions/perspectives by real people, just as looking for reddit results has been in the past for many people.

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?

Haven't posted these in a while, but there's not much change:
Since @heiseonline has left #X/ #Twitter, we've seen a bit more #traffic from #Mastodon; #Bluesky is also growing a bit. #Threads lags.

There was an error in our numbers of #Flipboard, after correction, it's way bigger. @fediverse

Seems like slrpnk.net hasn't been working for most of the day today. Hasn't worked for me on mobile or desktop. Says 502 bad gateway when trying to access the website. Anybody else expierencing this issue?

Edit: it's back up. Thank you admins!

I've got access to the beta of the Surf app. Some thoughts:

some stuff I really liked:

  • rss works (though no custom URLs yet, just what they already scraped)

  • you get lemmy, mastodon, bluesky, threads all together

  • you can make your own feeds and check what other people made (like a custom timeline, or topic-specific like “NBA”, “woodworking”, “retro gaming stuff”)

  • has different modes: you can switch between videos, articles, podcasts depending on the feed

but also...

  • can’t add your own RSS feeds (huge miss)

  • some feeds break and show no posts even when they’re active (ok, it's still a beta)

  • YouTube videos have ads (not into that—I support creators through patreon, affiliate links, whatever. not ads)

  • feeds you create are public by default unless you manually change it

  • not open source. built on open protocols, sure. but the app is locked up. (HUGE MISS)

all that said, I really believe: better feeds = better experience = better shot at the fediverse going mainstream.

anyone else tried it?

do you know anyone building an open source version of this? is that even realistic?

I’d love to hear what do you think :)

Direct link

Seems to be a way of making Bluesky style feeds with Mastodon-style services, well that's what I gather from reading the FAQ. They don't actually explain what this is anywhere.

  • Mastodon's 4.4 update brings more customisation, as well as the option to set referral headers to show that people indeed click on links
  • Continued uncertainty around the UK's Online Safety Act, with Mastodon.social saying they "are still aligning on a way forward for people in the UK"
  • new features and updates for PieFed
  • fedicon will be August 1-2 in Vancouver!

So i had some connection issue with some of fediverse instances.

I wasn't sure which fault it was: the ISP, the app or the instance.

A status / monitoring page would help in the future if something like this occur again. Do you know anything like this?

When I tried it in the past, I kinda didn't take it seriously because everything was confined to its instance, but now, there's full-featured global search and proper federation everywhere? Wow, I thought I heard there were some technical obstacles making it very unlikely, but now it's just there and works great! I asked ChatGPT and it says this feature was added 5 years ago! Really? I'm not sure how I didn't notice this sooner. Was it really there for so long? With flairs showing original instance where video comes from and everything?

i ran into a visibility issue when replying from mastodon to a pixelfed user’s followers-only post.

if a pixelfed user has a private account and makes a followers-only post, then a mastodon user (who follows them, but isn’t followed back) replies with the same followers-only visibility, the pixelfed user never sees it, even if they’re mentioned.

apparently this is because “followers-only” on mastodon only includes the sender’s own followers, not the post author or mentioned accounts. this makes cross-platform, non-mutual replies silently disappear.

anyone else think this should be addressed at the AP level? or is it something each app should patch separately (like a “followers + mentioned” visibility option)?

Decided to do this as a streaming stress test for my PeerTube server (and to learn more about live streaming setups and how OBS works), will probably lag behind updates in canvas size and such, as nothing like that is automated. Enjoy!
