Can I install Linux on the old systems so they work better?
why would you think it would run better if you don't even know if is it possible to install it in the first place? 🤔
i like linux but this sounds as removedhtmarish as rewriting everything, because thats probably what you'd need to do to make it work.
and by that point you can upgrade the hardware.
