I just spent a little time today creating my Lemmy.world account and trying to find equivalents of my favorite subs from Reddit. I really question whether Reddit will survive the uprising that has spawned. I think the IPO is going to go very poorly, then Reddit will turn into some commercial mess. This is my first Lemmy post, BTW!

Loving it - federation is great, hardly ever even know which instance I'm interacting with from kbin, which is a good thing as it means the federation is working and mostly seamless. Can't wait for some apps to come out and streamline the experience, hopefully some more people will start coming here to populate a lot of the communities that I'd like to participate or lurk in. Right now there's a lot of... uh... shouting into the void trying to fill the space. I'm posting way more than I ever did on reddit just because like... somebody has to do it, right?
Thanks, where's the coffee machine, please?
so. um. my question is, in mastadon even though you have an account with one instance you can still see/follow/whatever people from different ones (unless the admins made it private) is this the case with lemmy or am i stuck here and would need to go make some other places?
thanks
edit: NOW i see the tab switching from 'local' to 'all'. Derp
I believe it's like mastodon. I'm following communities from multiple servers.
For being my first 24 hours on Lemmy, Iβm having a really good time! Has the same βnewβ feel that the initial couple years of the greats did.
Only question is what happens to my account if the instance I joined under shuts down? I get that content may still exist on linked instances, but what about the account itself? Can it be salvaged? Or is there benefit to have accounts on a few of the big dogs?
digg dΓ©jΓ vu
so this is where we flee pala, hi!
Once the server caught up and let me create my account it's been good. Still learning the details.
Hello! Looks nice, I realize it will probably take some time to get used to, but I hope the community will grow. I mod a sub on Reddit and we are thinking about a blackout in protest, in any case it would be cool to set up shop here in the fediverse :)
The Jerboa app though could use with some improvements to navigate the different communities.
So far itβs been good. There is a bit of a learning curve, setting up on mobile devices was a little challenging. Seems to be working well now. This thread has been really helpful for me.
I like the website. I like the idea. I like lack of advertising and hyper-paranoia and consumer algorithms.
What I don't like is some of the devs describing themselves as 'communists' and 'anarchists.'
Extremism is never a good look, and the fact that Lemmys founders are... Definitely tickling that dragons tail is concerning to me
Where are the self described anarchist devs? I've only seen self described communism (and censorship of criticism of authoritarian governments on dev run instance.)
So far the mobile site is way better than Reddit. I feel like Reddit was always humping my leg trying to get me to install their shitty app.
I also really like the federated aspect, but I do agree with others in that I fear this may be too confusing for the average user and it won't catch on.
I'm a big fan of it. The website is great and I'm thankful that I can interact with posts and comments on other servers. I think for most people's adoption the picking of a server to join is intimidating because there are so many options.
To draw more users it needs to be made abundantly clear that you can interact across servers.
Website seems pretty neat. Glad to have a proper alternative to Reddit as it continues to burn to the ground lol.
As the saying goes, fuck /u/spez!
I'm scared and confused and don't know where all the cat pictures are.
I just got here, figuring things out slowly
I haven't used Lemmy much yet, but I'm honestly impressed by how well it seems to work so far.
Hey thanks, glad to be here. Lemmy seems very promising!
I'm having trouble navigating through lemmy. The Frontpage was different before I created an account. Could someone explain the instances? I logged in to lemmy.world does that mean the content on the rest of lemmy is off limits? I have to create an account for each instance?
I see there is lemmy.ml and others
Edit: I get it now. Thanks for the explanation
Easiest thing to do, click Communities up at the top, then click "All" right below "List of communities"
This will show you all of the communities from all of the federated lemmys (sorted by number of users), and allow you to subscribe to them and easily interact with them from your lemmy.world account. Once you subscribe to the ones you want, you can go back to the main lemmy.world home screen and click Subscribed, which will give you a list of posts from your subscribed communities, much like the Reddit home screen.
I'm finding it hard to get rid of the "Open Reddit"'s muscle memory
That was easy for me. Apollo was Reddit for me. I deleted my account, removed that app, and now the barrier to entry of reaching Reddit would be going to the mobile site, soβ¦ Iβd rather have all my teeth pulled with a rusty pair of pliers. Addition cured.
Feels like being back on old forums again :) I think I'll like it here
Quite like it... haven found a good mobile client yet though. But I've only tried Jerboa, and that just kept loading forever
Using the websites as PWAs is perfect IMO. I'm using the Kiwi browser (any chromium-based Android browser should be able to do this, as well as Firefox etc.).
Go to whatever instance you're using (like lemmy.world or lemmy.one etc.), go to the drop-down for settings, and find "Install App" or "Add to Homescreen". This should install it as a PWA (there you can also choose if you want it on your home screen, in the app drawer, or both), so if you click the Lemmy icon on your home screen/app drawer, it should be a fully proper app now (no address bar, could in theory support notifications, offline usage, etc. depending on how the PWA was coded).
I also tried Jerboa, but using lemmy.world directly as a PWA has been a great experience.
