Hi! My husband and I (early thirties, from US) just spent 5 days in the Algarve based in Carvoeiro. We enjoyed our time but I don’t see a lot on this thread about Carvoeiro so I thought I would share some of our experience that might be helpful for others when planning a visit!

Stay: we stayed at the Tivoli Carvoeiro hotel - it is about a 15 minute walk from the town center.

Pros: very clean hotel, included breakfast with lots of options, staff extremely nice, spa and restaurants on site if you are into that. The reason we chose the hotel was the amazing view and terrace that many of the rooms have! It also has a nice pool though we didn’t use it ourselves. They also have a free tuk tuk that takes you into Carvoeiro, Marinha Beach, and Centeanes Beach

Cons: food is a bit more expensive than elsewhere in town (no surprise being a nice resort), our room was under the breakfast area so the first day it was a bit noisy at breakfast time but we got used to that, and this is a personal pet peeve for me but I noticed some guests being a bit snooty towards the staff over petty things - not the hotels fault just be aware that some of the clientele that come there give off White Lotus vibes. We loved the hotel and would for sure stay again!

Carvoeiro(the town):

Pros: small so it is easy to get around, good amount of food options, very safe to walk around. Has Algo Seco off the boardwalk which was a highlight of the whole trip! Very central driving distance for other places in Algarve

Cons: it is small - so if you want a LOT of variety to do or nightlife stay somewhere else. It was fine for us because we wanted to chill but worth mentioning. Also the beach in town was covered in seaweed when we went which can be pretty common there (there are a ton of other options nearby but you will need to drive)

I’ll post what we did and tips/pros and cons but I hope this helps if you are considering Carvoeiro as a base!

OK I'm aware that this is a completely insane ridiculous request lol but I flew from Faro to London in August and had some time to kill in duty free and ended up buying a magnet. The magnet was orange/red, 3D, in the shape of a fish and soft with padding inside, like a really small toy kind of.

Like many people I try to buy a magnet whenever I go on holiday, but i chose this specific one because I have two kittens who are obsessed with soft little toys, particularly fish, so I thought that they'd like it too.

I gave them the fish and I have never seen a reaction like it - they were instantly enamoured. They both started taking it in turns to carry it around in their mouths or bat it around on the ground and chase it. Because of the magnet, I also realised that I could stick it to different things in our flat (radiators, clothes dryers, rails, the fridge) and they could have fun jumping up to get it down. The obsession persisted for weeks until the fish somehow disappeared.

Both of the kittens just haven't seemed themselves since. I've turned the whole place upside down and it's just completely gone, which makes me worry that it could have fallen in with the recycling and into the outside bin, which is now long gone. They both keep wandering around aimlessly meowing and sniffing around and it's breaking my heart.

I've trawled google and can't find the same magnet anywhere online. This is a real long shot but if anybody is flying from Faro to the UK at any point and could possibly pick up a new one and post it to me then I'd obviously cover the costs of the fish itself and postage etc, plus compensate you for your time and kindness.

apologies for how ridiculous this all is lol and huge huge thank you if anybody is able to help us out. If so I'll video the big reunion and post it here - could be a tearjerker!

Have included a vid of Charlie the kitten and the fish in question before it left us...

Well I hate that I am even having to write this but After numerous attempts at communication I have no other choice, The popular Resort Dunas douradas located in Quinta do Lago is ACTIVELY destroying the Nature reserve (protected by portuguese government, except they clearly do not care) called the Ria formosa under the guise of clearing invasive species, in reality it is because they want their clients to have a better view, yes I am unfortunately serious. They have lied over and over again saying they will stop and they are finished but it is more than obvious they will continue to destroy the nature reserve until they have killed it completely. PLEASE help me spread awareness as they have already destroyed vast parts of it. #BoycottDunas

My memoir 'Don't Be So Sensitive' talks a lot about the Algarve - and especially Praia da Luz - of 50 years ago and is winning some excellent reviews on Amazon.

I’m visiting Algarve right now with my boyfriend. I’m vegetarian and he’s not, which is usually not an issue when we travel but I’m finding every restaurant here has only one vegetarian entree option and it’s something super heavy like pizza or pasta.

I don’t mind this every once in awhile but it’s getting tiring to have this be my only meal option everybody.

Does anyone have any restaurant recommendations that are good in the area? We are thinking of trying out some of the strictly vegetarian restaurants but I’d like to go somewhere that’s not just that so my boyfriend can enjoy seafood while we are here. We do have a car so are flexible with location.

How does a foreigner buy tickets for local first or second division matches? My visit will coincide with the matchday on September 3. I think Portimonense has a home game then, but I'm open to seeing any match

Norwegian lurker here. Visiting Algarve this week for the first time. Really looking forward to trying the local cuisine. My favorite food is 'clipp fish' (salted and dried fish, hopefully made out of cod). Anyone got a good restaurant to recommend ?

Hello, I'm in Lagos this September. Are there any suggestions, either in the town centre or in the outer city, where I could enjoy traditional Portugese food? Ideally a spot that isn't too touristy or trendy.

Thanks!

Hello guys! Planning to move to Algarve for few months (somewhere between september and december) with my family and looking for a recommendation for a place to stay in close proximity to a surf spot for intermediates & beginners. Is there anything decent within an hour long range from Faro airport?. Really appreciate your help guys :)
