The Eternal Ruins are an endless labyrinth of ancient mysteries. Children awaken from strange statues and become Wanderers of the ruins.

i think it needs to expand in scope, and i'm doing it before it gets too large

i started off with !cathedrals because i personally like gothic/catholic architecture, but as there is no !imaginarymythology here i think it better not to splinter into two religion-based lemmyspheres

i realise changing the url means quite a few people might miss this announcement, which is unfortunate; but as the !lemmysphere@instance syntax is the only one that works with kbin and doesn't use the display name i thought it better to change

my posts Imaginary Religion will still be quite architecture-focussed, but will accept (and encourage) other art from historical and present religions and mythologies

this place will not be deleted, but archived in case it ever needs to be brought back in future. there's no need to unsubscribe from here, but you may want to subscribe there as well

from "Project: Black Plague (3)"

yes, this is in some ways a portent of things soon to come to this 'sphere

The original story derived from the novel "ivanhoe", but i push the time to 16 century europe with black plague. This project contains 7 pieces, will update regularly. The overall tone of this project is dark realistic fantasy, so you won't see something over the top. Nevertheless, using 7 pieces to show an ip and world setting is very challenging, so i will focus on the specific events and story telling during that special period. Since population reduce drastically, the church no longer has enough space to bury the dead, they start using the human skeleton as part of the church decoration, can refer to the Sedlec Ossuary bone church.

transcript

an abbot in black wearing a gold chain stands behind a table; in front of an elaborately decorated wall of skulls, other bones and candles; wreathed in cobwebs. in the centre of this wall is a gold cross with a lifelike christ figure

which, google translated, comes out as:

church in ruins

“Aside from the existence or absence of God, this alone is a big deal.”

"In my village, the place of prayer itself was an object of worship. There were only a limited number of people who knew the appearance of God, so it was actually something worthy of belief."

“It certainly felt like the work of God.”

"That's why everyone died."

An older painting massively reworked. As always when doing personal projects, I drew inspiration from real places that I visited.

This idea came to me long time ago, during visit of a rather famous medieval town in Czech. Sometimes things you see just stick with you and won't let you sleep until you make something out of them. This was the case.

From the very beginning I wanted to have this calm, meditative, approaching a safe sanctuary feeling. For that reason I chose the central composition that appears symmetric at first but is actually far from it. Both sides are balanced with different shapes making the image stable yet not boring. Choice of lightning and colors was also made with the same purpose in mind

This is a challenge that I did with some friends in the discord of adapting the tale "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe. I imagined the characters as part of a cult that worships the Mask of the Red Death and performs rituals through the rooms with different colors from the abbey, each representing a different stage of life.
