Crochet will make $3.8 million in his final year of arbitration-eligibility this season before the extension kicks in at the start of 2026. The six-year deal runs through 2031 and includes an opt-out after 2030.

How’s everyone been enjoying the season so far? Personally this is one of the most enjoyable teams to watch. Not thrilled at the pitching right now but the offense is absolutely crushing the ball.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito is expected to miss this season after his right ulnar collateral ligament was repaired with an internal brace.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas operated Tuesday at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Giolito was able to avoid ligament replacement surgery, which he had on Aug. 31, 2012, with Dr. Lewis Yocum, less than two months after Washington made Giolito the top overall pick in the 2012 amateur draft.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Wednesday's game at the New York Yankees he doesn't think Giolito will take the mound again in 2024. Recovery from the internal brace surgery, which uses an artificial material to make the repair, has allowed pitchers to return to the major leagues in as little as nine months. Tommy John surgery, which uses a tendon from elsewhere in the body to replace the torn ligament, has a usual rehab period of 12 to 18 months.

"So go through the process and hopefully he gets back sooner rather than later, you know, whenever that is, but I do believe it was like the best-case scenario," Cora said. "Seeing what has happened with this procedure in the past, he's going to be able to go out there and throw his changeup and his good fastball and help the Red Sox win some more games."

Giolito, who signed a $38.5 million, two-year deal with the Red Sox, turns 30 in July.

He made two spring training. starts He threw a pair of scoreless innings in his first outing before on Feb. 25 against Minnesota, then reported discomfort in the elbow allowing four runs and three walks in 2 1/3 innings against the Twins on March 1.

Giolito reached the major leagues in 2016 with Washington. He was an All-Star in 2019 while pitching for the Chicago White Sox and has been reliable during his big-league career, throwing at least 160 innings in five of the last six seasons. He is 61-62 with a 4.43 ERA in 178 starts and two relief appearances.

Free agent pitcher Lucas Giolito will likely miss the start of the 2024 season after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow, the Red Sox announced Tuesday morning.

Manager Alex Cora expressed the team’s disappointment in losing Giolito, especially as Boston struggles to strengthen their bullpen.

“We’re obviously concerned,” Cora told reporters in Florida. “Not a good day for us.”

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, initial imaging of Giolito’s elbow likely reveals a partially torn UCL and flexor strain. The injury, which could sideline the pitcher for the entire season, may require surgery.

Brutal news: Initial imaging showed Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito likely has a partially torn UCL and flexor strain and could miss the 2024 season, league sources tell ESPN. Giolito, who signed a two-year deal with Boston, may need surgery to repair the right-elbow damage. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) March 5, 2024

Giolito underwent Tommy John surgery as a prospect in 2012, however he has remained relatively healthy through his career.

Giolito, who signed a two-year $38.5 million contract this offseason, has remained relatively healthy during his career in the majors. While he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012 as a prospect, he’s made at least 29 starts in each of the past six seasons.

I get that he wasn't the best option for the Sox in 2024 with Yoshida at DH, Raffy at third and Casas at first but I'm bummed that he won't be on the Sox next year.

11

Despite finishing last in the American League East in 2023 and three times in the past four years, the Boston Red Sox aren't expecting to make any big free-agent splashes to improve their chances of contending next season.

12

"The Boston Red Sox are telling teams that All-Star closer Kenley Jansen, who's scheduled to earn $16 million, is available," Nightengale wrote. "They also are open to listening on offers for outfielder Masataka Yoshida, who has four years and $72 million remaining on his contract."

13

The righty was designated for assignment before the holidays but lingered in DFA limbo for a while since the normal seven-day window is paused between Christmas and New Year’s. Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 40, though their deal with Lucas Giolito has not yet been made official.

Castillo, 25 in May, has 59 2/3 innings of major league experience to this point in his career. He has a 5.43 earned run average in that time, having stuck out 18.1% of batters faced, walked 9.3% and kept 44.7% of balls in play on the ground.

14

Grissom, who made 64 big league appearances throughout the last two seasons with Atlanta, was dealt in exchange for left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale. The 22-year-old was selected in the 11th round of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft, and due to an overcrowded infield depth chart, the Braves elected to do right by Grissom and provide him with a more favorable opportunity to play every day in Boston — a new chapter that the former No. 22-ranked prospect also welcomes in open arms.

“I want to say thank you (to the Red Sox) for believing in me and giving me a shot to play for this incredibly historic ball club and I couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter with new teammates, new coaches, new fans and family. I can’t wait to get started,” Grissom published on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, shortly following the trade.

15

The Red Sox are exploring trades involving their young outfielders, reports Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. While Speier doesn’t identify anyone who is specifically part of talks, the Sox have a few intriguing possibilities.

Of the six primary outfielders on the 40-man roster, three have yet to qualify for arbitration: Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela. Duran has a little under two years of MLB service, while Abreu and Rafaela made their MLB debuts late in the 2023 campaign.

16

The Red Sox and Lucas Giolito are in agreement on a two-year, $38.5MM deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal includes an opt-out after the 2024 campaign. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the deal includes $1MM in incentives for both years with $19MM guaranteed in the first year, making the second-year opt-out a $19.5MM decision.

17

The Red Sox are in need of starting pitching, and according to WEEI's Rob Bradford, Boston is "showing strong interest" in bringing back veteran left-hander James Paxton.

Paxton posted a 4.50 ERA over 19 starts for the Red Sox in an injury-limited 2023 campaign. Injuries have been an issue for the 35-year-old, particularly in recent years -- he signed with the Red Sox before the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent the prior April while with the Mariners.

Rest in Peace, Wake. You will be missed.
