This one is perfect for my budget (not counting shipping it to my country)

I wanna really get it but I want some second opinions.

I just wanna write while I put programming sucks on. And play classic Half Life.

I spent way too long to get it working and I was almost ready to give up.

I tried the standalone ISO updater with a LOGO.GIF file. It recognized the image, but after reboot the original Lenovo logo was still there. No error message, no warning, nothing.

Same with the Windows firmware updater.

The one thing that finally worked was a Winflash64.exe incantation found buried somewhere deep in the Lenovo forums 😠

Winflash64.exe -patch -logo logo.gif -exit

I've been trying to test Intel Rapid Start Technology on my X1C9 and see how it compares to os-driven hibernation.

But my firmware doesn't show the option for IRST. I've seen screenshots from other people having this in the Power section.

Is this even a thing on recent ThinkPads? Has anyone been able to enable it?

I have the partition with correct GUID type. I also have OPAL enabled on the drive, but I don't think it should affect this feature... or does it?

Got this T540p for free from work, it came with a dual-core i5-4200M, 8GB of RAM, the awful 1080p TN panel and the GT730M dGPU.

Upgrades: New TrackPad (T450 Synaptics), i7-4700QM, 16 GB DDR3L RAM, AUO B156HAN01.2, and a good clean (yep, that's an upgrade in my books).

The i7 runs quite well in there, I had some doubts about the thermal situation since it's a 47-watt chip in a dGPU model but so far it holds up pretty well with a -70mw undervolt and Arctic MX-4 thermal paste. Idle it gets up to around 45°C, under load I've never seen it get hotter than 75°C. In addition to Throttlestop, I'm using TPFC on the "smart" setting to keep the noisy Toshiba fan from ramping up and down every .2 seconds.

The GT730M isn't good for much these days but it runs older games quite well. All in all, I ended up really liking this ThinkPad. It's very annoying to take apart, though.

I recently bought a cheap crappy Sim card to try and get it to work on a ThinkPad x200. Has anyone here done this successfully before?

I feel like I am just being an idiot. I'm not sure where to go to look for the relevant Sim card information to configure and I'm not even sure if I'm doing anything correctly.

How do you replace the rubber feet on a T480? There are plenty of sellers that sell what they claim to be feet for the T480 for cheap, but they don't have the depression on their back sides for the plastic protusion on the bottom case to fit into. I know that the "proper" way of replacing the feet is a bottom case replacement, but it seems a bit excessive.

Are there any sellers online that sell feet that fit? Is there a way to reliably create that indentation on non indented feet? Am I out of luck and will I have to replace the whole bottom case just for two rubber feet?

I recently bought a refurbished x390. Got it and found the battery had one charge cycle on it. i5-8365U, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, 1920x1080 IPS. A very nice machine as a backup to the family travel x1 nano.

Hi, I'm a Reddit refugee, mostly lurker there but one comment I made was useful to a few people so I don't want it lost if/when I delete all my reddit data. I'm really hoping Lemmy gets a lot more active users and more content so I'm trying to do my (small) part:

I found that I need to wait 5-10 minutes after booting for the battery usage to drop to 4W. That might just be because of all the stuff I have running such as zfs - that's another reason I originally thought 6-7W was the best I could do.

The key parts from my notes for the gpu:

• Set Prime Nvidia profile to intel gpu.

• Modify /etc/default/grub to have

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi="!Linux-Lenovo-NV-HDMI-Audio""

• update-grub2 and obviously reboot

The kernel option I found whilst researching what was stopping the gpu from going into power saving mode. I don't have the link where I got it from right now. I had tried blacklisting the kernel modules for it but this made the power usage worse. It needs to be running, with intel gpu selected and the kernel option above.

BTW 3-4W is with screen brightness down (one up from darkest).

I'm in love with this big guy :)

And here are the upgraded components:

• 1080P IPS Screen
• 512GB SSD
• DVD caddy replaced by a HDD caddy (intalled an additional 512GB SSD)
• Processor upgraded to an i7-4712MQ
• Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste upgrade
• US keyboard replaced by another one with Spanish layout (original, found on eBay)
• RAM upgraded to 12GB (enough for me)
• Brand-new original 9-cell battery (also found on eBay)

I don't think I forget anything... well maybe the best upgrade: I use Arch, btw!

I use this setup to play around with all sorts of GPUs. Anything with a PCIe interface and windows 10 drivers and I'll try to run it. I don't do any serious work on this machine for the most part.

I originally got this ARM ThinkPad to install Linux onto it, but support for the Snapdragon 8cx processor, and other hardware hasn't been supported until recently. I read a thread just the other day that it was now working on the Ubuntu Concept ISO built specifically for the X13s, and thought that I'd give it a try!

Since I got it, I've been running Windows 11 on it waiting until the Linux firmware was ready, and the experience has been less than fantastic.

Recently on Windows 11 Pro, the ThinkPad has had bluetooth headphones cutting out, and refusing to connect until it has been rebooted, as well as constant Windows Explorer crashes upon logging in (huge icons, icon spacing on Desktop is stretched out, Explorer doesn't start and it just shows the wallpaper with nothing else, etc). I haven't yet had any of these issues on Ubuntu yet!

To get the system up-to-date with everything working (sound, bluetooth, Wifi, etc.) I ran the following commands in this order after the fresh install. I have heard updating everything without doing the firmware first broke some things on others' machines.

1. sudo apt update
2. sudo apt install --upgrade-only linux-firmware
3. sudo apt dist-upgrade
4. Reboot

I'll be using this computer on Ubuntu now that everything is working! This post is written from it as well! :D

Has anyone tried powering the x270 without batteries just with a usb c charger?

Ok, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to hardware stuff. I have a Thinkpad T490 with the 1920x1080 non-touch screen. My complaint is that I ended up with the model with only 45% NTSC. I would like to upgrade to something with 72%.

AFAICT, my screen's model # is N140HCA-EAC. 30-pin connector. Is this - https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Lenovo/FRU~01YN154/ compatible?

I already know there's no blocks or whatever in the bios preventing an upgrade, just want to make sure I buy the right thing. Would rather not ship from China so NA sellers are good.

(btw I obtained the model of what I have now by running "edid-decode </sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid", I'm on Linux)

Action Retro briefly shows an amazing ThinkPad T61 and run Haiku OS on it!

Hi, my X280 just suddenly won't turn on. It was left on a bed alone so no physical damage. When plugged in the charging indicator is solid white after flashing white 3 times. I've tried turning it on with the battery out but plugged in. I've also tried draining the CMOS battery (unplugged CMOS and the battery and held the power button down for 10 seconds before plugging everything back in.)

I'm wondering now if it could be a problem with the power button? The laptop is dual booting Fedora 38 and Windows 11 if that helps and wasn't powered off but went into sleep/hibernation before this behaviour. Is it somehow stuck in sleep mode? I have had some issues with sleep to wake being slow/finicky before.

I have access to a screwdriver set and isopropyl alcohol. What would my next steps be?

For unlocking older Thinkpads with a BIOS password.

Late last year I purchased a 12th gen framework laptop and honestly it's been pretty good. My biggest issues with it are really the hinge is not strong at all even with the upgraded one, the keyboard is trash, lack of trackpoint with buttons, and lack of IO. Don't get me wrong I really like this device but I keep thinking I should switch back to my T480. Has anyone else switched back from a framework?
