The USWNT take the field for the first time in 2024. The United States Women’s National Team finally are set to take the field. Tonight, they play in their first ever W Gold Cup match when they take on the Dominican Republic. It’s the first chance of the year to show that the team has improved from a tumultuous 2023 that saw them have their worst ever finish in the Women’s World Cup and has seen a coaching change and the departure of a few legends.

The W Gold Cup begins! The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup is here! The tournament begins tonight at Dignity Health Sports Park with Group A action, and the first match pits Mexico against Argentina. Mexico is a team that has the talent to take the leap to the next level, and it feels like they are ready to make that leap.

Which players could hit new heights at the tournament? The inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup is set to kick off, providing a new international tournament to crown a regional champion. The eight best Caribbean, North American, and Central American teams are joined by four invitees from South America based on their respective finishes at the 2022 Copa América Femenina. The competition provides an opportunity for glory, different opposition, and, for some participants, additional meaningful matches in advance of the summer’s Olympic Games.

Canada should be considered a tournament favorite. The final group at the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup features three in-region opponents and one guest nation from CONMEBOL. Not only is Canada expected to finish atop the standings, but the United States Women’s National Team’s chief rival should also put in a stern challenge for the title. While Costa Rica appears the likely runner-up on paper, Paraguay and El Salvador could provide a stern test in the pressure cooker of tournament play. All six matches will be held at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas, the only part of the competition being contested outside of Southern California.

The reigning champions of South America look to rule another continent. For the enjoyment of the neutral viewer, Group B at the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup might be the most interesting experience. Brazil is the dominant program in South America with eight Copa América Femenina titles and should travel deep into the current tournament despite being under the stewardship of a recently hired manager. However, Panama, Colombia, and Puerto Rico are hardly shrinking violets and will provide stiff competition, having survived the rigors of respective qualifying campaigns. With the potential of up to three spots in the knockout stage up for grabs, expect this quartet of teams to provide a trio of quarterfinalists.
