I think we could increase the number of stem phds just by changing the title from Doctor to Ultimate Grandmaster.

Took me a moment: in Germany at least, you don’t start a PhD without a master”s degree.

If others are confused as well: elsewhere it’s different, I believe?

In Ireland you can be invited straight to PhD. The whole process takes just as long though, and there isn't a guarantee you'll be awarded anything if not completed.
