That's kind of where I come from as well. For years I've been more of a lurker than an active part of any community I've followed. After joining the fediverse I decided to change this little by little - partially for myself and partially for the same reason as you (if I want a place to talk about the stuff I like, it needs to exist and grab people first).
It also helps that off the Fediverse, people usually have already posted the thing I saw, or said the comment I wanted to say already, so I toss an upvote and leave. On the Fediverse the comparative lack of activity and engagement means that nobody else has seen and posted the cool thing, or vocalized the thought. So I engage more by virtue of it not being done for me already.
