I have a male cat that loves to sing when he's got a toy in his mouth

Same here. Our tabby (boy) will fetch his mouse and yell/squeak about it. We think he thinks he sounds fierce.

Probably her motherly instincts just kick in. So toys are babies. The cat is probably sterilized.
