Strictly from a cap perspective, paying a third string quarterback a first round rookie contract is not ideal.

They only saved $940,000 by trading him this year. That's not worth a 4th nor the lack of insurance in my opinion. Pay the $940,000 and have some peace of mind if Purdy goes down. And if another team has a QB injury, and is desperate, then deal him.

Edit: I just watched Lynch's presser after the last game, seems Trey suggested he would like to be traded rather than being #3 and they accommodated that for him. And what Lynch was saying does make sense, the entire knock on Trey has been he needs more reps and experience and he sure as hell wasn't going to do that at #3 on the charts.
