I think part of it is the Doctor is fundamentally a new man now — his regeneration never was meant to happen, he was meant to die with Smith. And he spent 900 years defending Christmas. What now?

I will say, series 9 is in my opinion a good bit better than series 8. And there are going to be consequences for the Doctor.

That's a good point I overlooked. So, I guess the teenage angst works in that regard. Trying to find who you are and how you fit?
