No, social media is not just for pictures.
But if someone is using it just for pictures and you try to sell them on a service that isn't fitting to their use case, that's on you if they're not interested.
Know your audience. Offer them alternatives that actually fit their preferences, not yours.

Federation. It got cached on other instances. And Lemme.ee comments and posts are still there too, despite it's been retired.
In a sense, to function, fediverse share all you do with every other non-defederated server. Keeping that in mind makes one a bit more sober about what they post.
But it's a bit annoying if one's post is slow to receive updates once edited - for others to see it fixed.
