What have folks been up to this past week?

I've been a bit busy, but managed to squeeze in a bit of 3BLD practice while I was at a pub with friends.

Seems like a good way to practice for comps, with all the noise.

How badly does being inebriated affect your intuition and memo? Do you use the mind palace thingy for memo?

My inspection and lookahead both get much worse when drunk. I can still plan enough by taking longer, but the latter tanks my times :P

I don't think I actually drank any alcohol that time at the pub. My alcohol consumption is pretty low and infrequent, so I don't have a lot of data on how my memorization performance is affected. I do find that I'm noticeably worse if I haven't gotten enough sleep though. The few times I've consumed enough alcohol to feel the effects, I haven't noticed a significant effect on my speedsolving times. Perhaps I was just not very drunk. I didn't measure my blood alcohol levels.

I've heard of the mind palace technique, but I've never been able to use it effectively. My current memo strategy is to convert letter pairs into words, and stringing the words into a (vaguely) coherent story. Perhaps I should give the mind palace another try. Any recommendations?

Sleep deprivation is worse than being slightly inebriated for me. Insomnia has me used to it tho.

Any recommendations?

I don't do bld, but I kinda sorta use scenarios for playing music.

Story based mnemonics are pretty effective. IMO a mind palace should have multiple touchstones, so choosing words that have a strong emotional connection in general or a specific connection to the last word might be a good place to start.

When I'm playing music, if a chord sequence reminds me of a smoky jazz club, I'll try to recontextualize subsequent chords to that scenario and build on it. Happy chords might be me stepping out for some fresh air, aggresive chords would fit a fight breaking out, etc. Not sure if this helps :P
