I've joined here because I think Reddit's quality is going to tank after June 30, but I downloaded Jerboa and it doesn't seem to accept my credentials, regardless of instance. I'm confused.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You point your sign in on Jerboa to the instance you created the account on, in this case, lemmy.world. If you're having issues with that, wait a bit and try again. If you still have trouble, try posting in the [email protected] community.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

you created the account on, in this case, lemmy.world.

Oh hey! I didn't know you could manually enter the instance - I thought you had to choose It let me log in! Thanks so much for the tip! :)

FYI, the web page itself is a progressive web app. This means you can go to the web page in a mobile browser and click "add to home screen" and a shortcut shows up that behaves like an application. I think Jeroba will eventually be better than the PWA, but it's not there yet in my opinion.

The progressive web app is super nifty, that's what I've been using. Almost feels like BaconReader.

Sync for Lemmy will be coming out in 3-6 weeks (dev confirmed). I know that doesn't help you now (sorry), but soon!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Use the web version to sign up for an instance before trying to sign in to that same instance on jerboa

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

On Lemmy.world? Or Lemmy.ml?

... I'm really confused about these different sites/instances/defederation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

So it's helpful to think of each lemmy server as its own "mini reddit". It has its own collection of users and communities ( similar to subreddits). The cool thing is you can sign up from any of the lemmy servers and then subscribe to communities and interact with users from any other server. This is because all servers "talk" to all other servers, as long as they're not defederated ( See beehaw).

I think what the user above you was saying is to do the sign up on your desktop, with the server of your choice (lemmy.world is a decent choice). And then try logging into Jerboa using your credentials( and remembering which server you used to sign up-you can't sign into a different server from the one you created your account on)

I am also confused about what @Colt420 is suggesting here. It is clear that you already have a sign up for lemmy.world. This should be enough to log into Jeroba so what you're seeing is likely just a bug.

It's all a bit confusing, and ironically I wish there was a sub like r/NoStupidQuestions where I could ask for help. A few people have replied to me to tell me how the instances work, but I need an ELI3 or something, haha! Thank you for letting me know that it's likely just a bug. Will see how this smooths over in the months ahead. :)

I'm still sort of confused myself, but I think (someone please confirm or deny) a good non internet metaphor would be like a neighborhood or a small town. You move into Smallville, and you live, work, and shop there and become friends with a lot of the people there. That's lemmy.world. It's where you live. But there's nothing stopping you from getting on a bus or in your car and going and visiting TinyTown and shopping or visiting the residents there (ie, interacting with other instances), and they can come to Smallville and interact with you. Beehaw is like Grumpytown, they decided they didn't want to deal with certain people, so they built a wall around their town and blew up the bridges so no one can come visit and also their residents can't get out.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I see questions like this pop up on the NoStupidQuestions community on lemmy.world so it seems like a reasonable ask.

But tl;dr: If you are reading and posting on lemmy.world you are seeing and being seen by most people on lemmy in general. Any weird behavior is likely just normal open source growing pains.

No major issues with jerboa from me but I find the mobile website here better right now. These apps need love and are usually open source so they can use help!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been on mobile without any issues. I also personally prefer webpages to apps though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I had a similar issue. My verification email sent to spam. Once I found it and accepted, it was easy to sign in.

The first local instance I signed up before I fully understood/realized what I was doing was focused on getting together a Chinese or Chinese American instance. Seemingly decent, but I just really didn't want to be barging in on something that wasn't for me. People seem to really be liking Jerboa, but I find it much simpler finding other instances in the web browser. I still have much to learn though.

The first local instance I signed up before I fully understood/realized what I was doing was focused on getting together a Chinese or Chinese American instance.

Sort of unrelated to the general "Hey - I can't seem to log onto the app" enquiry, but I would be interested in helping out to evolve a Chinese instance. I'm not American, but am interested in trying to be a part of the Pan-Asian community.

I believe it was latte.isnot.coffee, but it appears they recently opened up. Or I was just a confused new user and didn't realize what instance the community/post was under. You can search for instances at: https://browse.feddit.de/ In cased you missed it, Beehaw defederated at the start of the recent big Reddit migration, so we won't receive any external post/updates and vise-versa outside of your own instance. If I'm oversimplifying or need correction - anyone correct me!
