Remember that at that time Star Trek was in really rough shape. Most of the cast thought TNG was a joke and would get cancelled after 1 season. A bunch of the scripts were leftovers from the 60s that they reworked slightly, so overall the quality of S1 was bad and the cast were also reacting to that.
Are you referring to the "rape gangs"? That is part of the character's backstory, not Denise's.
