They're not a dumbass for having an incorrect thought. The question mark shows they weren't sure.
It can also show incredulity. That's the unfortunate truth of communicating on the internet, shorter statements are often vaguer as they don't generally provide necessary context.
Maybe it was a “dumbass” of endearment.
