The proper response to things like this (if responding at all cannot be avoided), is ALWAYS, "I don't understand. Please explain."

Edit: and if/when they try to answer, say it again.

I hate the "boo." It sounds so childish (and yes, I know who we're dealing with.)

I think "that's uh- weird" is more effective.
