It's almost as if there was some kind of zone of moderation distancing from which may be considered inadequate
This is kind of reminding me of addiction, it's the same pattern of either doing it to 100% or not at all, there's no moderation possible. Usually if you're predisposed to that you'll bring that pattern into everything in your life not just substances (but probably mainly substances).
