You have to tip over your entire couch to vacuum under it?

It's a cheapo IKEA couch and I wanted to tighten some of the screws while I was being productive with the chores.

Sounds like your cat could do with a comfy perch. Have you tried putting a bed or towel up on a tall shelf or windowsill he can reach?
