I prefer box shaped states. The design is very human and doesn't really on silly things like geographic boundaries. If I had it my way, everything would be a square with a universal grid. For irregular shapes like Florida, just massively terraform it by dumping loads of earth into the Gulf and Atlantic to force it to be a big square.
