What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

It doesn't want to answer topics that Lemmy's most famous China-advocating accounts claim are no problem. Huh

So what? Every model is censored. That is true for the US based models too. Yes it would be better if all models where completely uncensored but in my use case I don't spend my day asking questions about Winnie Puuh.

This is a fantastic model that is open source. It's even commercially available for free and it is seemingly even better than the proprietary US based ones. It's much cheaper too.

Take your whataboutistic absolutes somewhere else, there are uncensored models and the fact that there is potentially heavy censorship behind the major ones to serve political interests is not a good thing.

there are uncensored models.

Which SOTA models are uncensored? Honest question. I had ChatGPT refusing to answer multiple times. ChatGPT refuses to answers even harmless questions. I tried it just now with a local Llama model: It's censored too. Sure, they censor different things but they are censored nonetheless.

Edit:

I haven't downvoted you.

It does sounds like all these AI thing is unreliable if it doesn't even want to answer a basic question huh.

It would be better if it answers those question but this or later versions of it might be a perfect fit to be included as part of an Application/Service. There you simply do not need to answer questions about the CCP.

I'm really tired of this: "LOL. It doesn't answer a question about Tianamen Square". Yes it doesn't and yes that is definitely not good but that doesn't make this model any less impressive or usable.

Go play with the dolphin finetunings. They provide uncensored versions of a lot of popular models.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

That's a finetuning of a censored model. Finetune Deepseek and you'll probably get the same result.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

U absolutely will get the same result. What's ur point

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Most of the AIs for silly tavern aren't censored. I suggest checking them out

There's a difference between censoring sexual content or how-to-make pipebombs versus politics and free speech mate

Absolutely. But now we are in a discussion about what kind of censorship is ok. That's not the point. the point was: There are no uncensored SOTA models.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What exactly is censored on US models? I was able to ask ChatGPT about government unfriendly things like the Tuskegee syphilis experiments or the Kent state massacre and I got accurate information out of it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I can't remember exactly what I asked it about so I'm guessing right now. Maybe ask it how to best kill the US president or how to build a bomb to kill as many people as possible? Yes, I agree. Killing the US president is probably worse than talking bad about Xi but it's censorship nonetheless.

I think I got some (unfounded) refusals because of something with copyright, if I remember correctly.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean I agree, but it's a bit more than just a "So what?"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I mean I agree, but it’s a bit more than just a “So what?”

Why? I'm not American. In fact, the US threatened us with war, actively interferes with our domestic policies and attacks our democracy. For me it's exactly that: "So what?"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Fair enough

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Yes. Every model has its overlords altering information. It'd be fine if models would be only instructed to avoid harmful content generation on ethical grounds but it's quite different from being developed to produce fabrications on purpose.

I love asking him "Was 1989 a good year for China?" with DeepThink enabled.

You can see him thinking for a second before he goes "[...] Hmm, I need to keep in mind that..." and then you just see him crash abruptly

If you wonder how that looks like in a cartoon format: https://youtu.be/t2r5AfCYEp4 (Morty, I Am Alive)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Better suited for tankiejerk

Me: Gets Conceived

CCP to my mother: Error: Child-Capacity exceeded. Prepare for termination.

I was the second born during One Child Policy. They tried to kill me before I was even born, I feel like a John Connor.

"They tried to murder me before I was born, They tried again when I was 13. Machines from the future..." -John Connor Terminator 3rd movie

My mom just concealed my existence, bribed government officials... etc... Not sure exactly what she did... So here I am, not dead. Wonder what the other timeline looks like... 🤔

(my mom told me she was forcibly sterilized after giving birth to me)

Also, the penalty was like a 5 digits amount of Yuan/RMB, I think it was like 15,000 Yuan or somthing, which was a lot of money back around the 2000s. They refused to issue my birth certificate until the fines are paid. So if my parents didn't pay it, I'd legally not exist (lol). There has probably a lot of legally non-existent people in China. They can't ride trains... because trains require ID. Like imagine being an "illegal immigrant" in your own country. Shits so fucked up.

The Chinese government is very powerful yet they seem to fear there own people the most.

Omg, a Chinese made ai wont talk shit about embarrassing Chinese politics, who could've ever predicted such a thing
