!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Well Lemmy tell you a story...

FUCK SPEZ!!!

Signed, practically all Lemmings

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I never cared much about Reddit, but then again, I'm not using Lemmy either. So maybe you're right.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This confused me, because your name is just @cabbage. Which indicates that you're on my instance. @[email protected].

Instead, you're @[email protected]

But you show up as @cabbage.

I don't understand life.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I think, on your end, my user name probably shows as just "cabbage", not "@cabbage". Which indicates it's a user name (not exclusive), not a handle (exclusive).

Similarly, OP shows up to me as "Aurora (she/her)" rather than "aurora_glamour", which is her handle. Piefed still displays the instance though.

It might not be ideal, as it makes imposters possible. Then again, that has always been the case by using visually identical Unicode characters, so it's not entirely a new problem.

When you posted this, I was just telling my son about the blackout and showing him videos on it. So, yeah, maybe not related to why is called Lemmy, but fuck spez!

Please stop. This is cringe and old. Not everyone is here for that.

There's nothing old about how shitty Reddit has become when nothing has changed since Reddit went public. Run by a greedy CEO, shitty admins, shitty mods, full of ads and bots, and now getting data scraped for AI training.

To suggest this is old news is to suggest people should just forget about it and move on. Welp, nothing has changed, people haven't forgotten, and if anything, Reddit has gradually been getting even worse.

Act like I signed up for my data to be scraped?

FUCK SPEZ!!!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

It is old that it’s time to move on.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I would argue both of you.

To @[email protected] I say, fuck spez. We're all here for that.

To @over_clox I would argue it's not old news but only because it's not news at all. That would be like saying the sky is blue is old news. Reddit being shitty is just something we all know, we have always known, and will always know. So, it's not new news, it's not old news. It's just life. Things people know. 1+1=2, and fuck Spez.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

And I could say Elon and Trump are old news. Sure, fuckit, let's just let all the oligarchs get rich, take control, and steal all your data at the same time.

Or like NOT!!!

Don't forget, eat the rich, and fuck the oligarchs.

No, I’m here for self hosting. Not the cringe Reddit hate fest

In a 2020 post, Lemmy's co-creator Dessalines wrote about the origin of the name Lemmy. "It was nameless for a long time, but I wanted to keep with the fediverse tradition of naming projects after animals.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

That was a tradition? It doesn't seem like it's stuck around.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Oooohhhh!! I thought Lemmy’s icon was a mouse, that’s why I was confused

The animals and god.

Why are you called Aurora?

OP isn't asking "why do you like chocolate?".

If OP were curious why his name is what it is, he could ask the person who came up with it. He could have reasons for it, or not, but that person would know.

In this case, he's asking the community if they know the origin of the name for the Lemmy project. The answer could range from "It was completely random, just something that came up in my head" to "I thought the project reflected a trait in a particular animal, so felt the name would represent that".

So it's potentially an answerable question, unlike "why do you like chocolate?".

In fact, direct from the github page:

Why Is It Called Lemmy?

Lead singer from MotΓΆrhead.

The old school video game.

The Koopa from Super Mario.

The furry rodents.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

The point is, why is anything named anything?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Super Mario character

(Satire) because without a overseer/god we will all just walk off a cliff unless this god/overseer makes one of stand and stop us from doing it.
