Take them to your local recycling center.
Sometimes bottle/can depots will take that kind of stuff in small quantities too.
I usually collect a few different recyclable items like bulbs, batteries, and general electronics, then take it in together.

MODERATORS
In the US cities I have lived in the local "city dumps" usually have a Hazardous Waste Disposal area that in my experience has always been free. I have mostly lived in the northwest so I have no idea if the same facilities are easily available where you are at. Further, only large-ish cities have such "city dump" facilities to begin with, while smaller, more rural communities may have no such available services.
Try an internet search for "(your city) hazardous waste disposal."
