Is this just for devs, or can game artists join too?

Solidarity to my CWA brothers and sisters (and enbys)

I'd like to see this extended to software developers in non-game industries.

How does this work exactly? My familiarity with Unions is that either they're created inside an existing company, or a union gets people to unionize at a company. The idea with both of this situations is that all the workers leaving would be detrimental for the company so the company has to give into the Union Demands to some extent.

With my unfamiliarity with with this video game union, it seems they've just created one, but wouldn't that mean that a company has to decide to hire workers from this union? My understanding with the game industry is there's thousands of experienced people that will work for cheap, so I feel most game companies will have options vs union workers.

Also, I hope they publish the games they are involved in so i can support them.

If you're in a union already, that is not something that can generally be asked about by management, both at hiring or during your employment. Being in a union is not the same as being in a unionized workplace.

When employees of a store/factory/etc decide to unionize, there's a point at which a specific larger union can be chosen to represent them (AFL-CIO, IBEW, Teamsters, etc). If successful, this is what allows for collective bargaining led by a union representative.

First order of business, negotiating to scrap that shittastic seating plan in the picture.

For real. And they almost all have the laptop down on the desk breaking their necks looking down at it. Looks horrible. Is that how it usually is with this kind of work?

No idea what studio is pictured, it looks more like a help desk or support layout to me. "Sensible" places will do rows of 6 or 8 people seperated by mid height dividers, but even that sucks in my opinion.

Edit- It's stock photography of hell

I was gonna say, this looks stock photo as hell. Not a single bit of individualism at each desk in an industry filled with artists and companies that have Weta Workshops make statues for their entryways. Plus, laptops? I can't imagine rendering and compiling being done on laptops, nor is there the room for hardware like Wacom touchscreens.

Feels very "give me a photo of an office with computers."
