Almost as if Google disapproves of custom ROMs.

Google can take GraphineOS from my cold dead hands

Lemmy Android users in shambles.

You're getting downvotes, but I get the vibe that most of the c/android users either use Graphene or aspire to. So you're not wrong.

(I'm in the aspire camp)

I have no data to back this up but I think most Lemmy Android users don't use custom ROMs or root their phones.

For the past 10 years (or so), reddit and lemmy users have been complaining about the updates on their Google or Samsung phones, which confirms that they use the pre-installed OS and don't even think about switching to another OS.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 weeks ago

Well, Samsung blocked the bootloader so you can't even if you wanted

I do. 🖕google

I'm writing this on GrapheneOS right now

Ive had too many fights in this community with people who dont use custom ROMs and dont care about privacy to agree with you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I do. I've rooted every phone I owned on day 0.

Yeah that was the joke. I guess it hit too close to home for some lol

Lemmy has no chill

True I'm pretty bummed. Looks like graphene can keep building from aosp for the time being though. Hopefully then can find a better long-term solution.

What other reliable (in regard to reliable custom rom compatibility) phone macturers does this leave us with? Fairphone maybe, are there any others?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 3 weeks ago

literally not a single one if you agree with the reasons GrapheneOS has only supported Pixel devices.

and I do agree with them, personally:

There are none on the level of Fairphone. Sony has seen fairly consistent support for its devices over the years and has retained features like the headphone jack and SD card slot, so may be a decent alternative to look into.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

That's sad to hear. I fear that less people will use custom roms and therefore overall development will suffer. But maybe some people will opt for fairphone instead of google, which at least makes it a tiny bit better imo...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I doubt that, to be honest. People will look for any excuse to avoid spending more on the basis of ethics. The usual one with Fairphone is "well they removed the headphone jack so therefore the entire operation is clearly an advanced greenwashing scheme".

Not to mention the very legitimate excuse that Fairphone is still yet to support many countries outside of Europe. It is too big a risk for many when every generation to date has experienced isolated technical issues that require direct support from Fairphone to resolve.

Right after my bf just got a Pixel 8 too. 😐 Fucking foul, I will be importing a fairphone when my 6a dies.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Apparently their software support is quite shit according to graphene devs

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I'd have to ask the Calyx devs abt it, I use Calyx.
