Opensource handheld CNC router (www.compassrouter.com)
submitted 3 days ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Compass is an opensource handheld CNC router that you can build from a kit for less than a third the price of industry equivalent, the shaper origin. While this may not be directly solar punk I think the fact that is opensource makes it related. Also, it can enable people to build structures and furniture more easily with plans shared online. I envision making beautiful benches for bus stops and community gardens around my city.

Checked it out - pretty cool to use mouse sensors for the tracking, also pretty cool that it's basically a mech suit for a dremel lol. I also enjoyed the site's aesthetic. All around cool stuff, wish I could use it for something.

The mouse sensor tracking is brilliant, but these handheld routers can drain batteries quick - if you're planning to use it away from outlets check power stations on gearscouts.com to find one with enough wattage for extended use.

This was making me wet, until I checked the price... for a kit!

Granted, it's open source, but it looks like sourcing the BOM would be quite a bit of work.

The Maslow, which is entirely autonomous, cost less. The downside is the space required. The Compass is the winner in the space required department, but 500$ ?

That's totally fair. It isn't cheap but the price is amazing compared to the Shaper Origin which is $2,900.

I also like the maslow which is more accurate over long distances so it would be better for furniture.
