Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Define woke without sounding like an ass...

To be overly concerned with social issues, namely ones that fall into the category of "social justice" issues. To allow said social issues and the discussion of them to dominate and define one's life.

To turn all discussion towards national level social justice issues whenever possible even when it is inappropriate to do so.

To put as much or more value on signalling virtue than having it. To frame all individuals not sharing all of one's ideals (or in some cases not espousing those ideals vehemently enough) as immoral.

That should just about do it. It's worth noting that merely believing in ideals X,Y, and Z does not make one "woke", it is the problematic obsession with ideals that defines it.

Don't feed the low-effort trolls folks. At least make them put a shred of effort in.

Woke is to be awake, I love how the term is an insult yet the meaning is of being awake to issues of the world.

This post screams class discrimination.

K. Then might I suggest you spend your time on X, reddit, or Truth Social instead of Lemmy? Perhaps you'll be much happier amongst like-minded people.

The fuck is true social lol

Your statement would have more impact if you said it with a account with a posting history not made today.

Sure Lemmy has a bias, your earnest participation can add more voices to the discourse.

Found spez’s Lemmy account.

I mean yeah, it's not a multi million business running the instances of lemmy, just some people around the world so I could understand why "poor"

But what's wrong about being progressive ?

These are the posts that the ruling class want to be normal.

I don't get this sub, it's called unpopular opinion, but when one is posted it gets downvoted?
Shouldn't this sub be called something else then?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

There's no effort here. If he said "Lemmy is more woke than reddit and here's why" and gave detailed, fact-based responses then sure, we'll have a listen. But to just pop in and say something is 'woke' with no exposition, no reasoning, and zero effort, yeah, it's going to be downvoted.

I often downvote on post quality. This post has "no body needed", which leads to crap content. Tell us why, or it is just noise.

This isn't reddit, there is no rule saying you have to up vote it if you disagree. It's just a space you can put an opinion that you think is unpopular, and no one cares about votes anyways.

When I see a stupid title I often don't even look at the sub its in before voting.

Context matters.

Let me translate

"Reddit was clearly a huge pile of ass. However, Lemmy is showing signs of the onset of a similar pattern of degradation -- most notably, trolls and shouty bad-faith argumentative users make it an unpleasant experience whenever any political topic is discussed. What proportion of them are deliberate trolls or paid shills, and what proportion actual homegrown obnoxious leftists, is unknowable and probably not super relevant. What is relevant is that the problem of creating meaningful discussion and an honest forum for good communication is by no means solved, simply because we've set up a nice network outside of the administrative control of bad-faith actors. We still have a lot of work to do to make it actually a nice place to exist."

"Also side note Lemmy has some UI and UX issues but honestly who gives a fuck, Reddit also had a miserable UI for all of its lifetime and that didn't make much of a difference, because the quality of the discussion is what makes a social network good or bad."

(Edit: Also, I upvoted this purely for that fact of stating an actually unpopular opinion)
