“Telling it like it is”

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 hours ago

That’s wishful thinking

  • Japanese manufacturers may have started driving toward the party but they’re way late and lost along the road
  • US legacy manufacturers will stick with gasoline trucks, and are rolling back their EV efforts
  • Rivian and Lucid are promising but still in the business of a small number of niche models. Rivian may change that in the next couple years but it’s not a given

So, Hyundai/Kia. And we’re wondering why Chinese companies look like they’re about to take over

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

That may no longer be enough. It won’t matter if people no longer boycott them but

  • huge money loss in Cybertruck
  • investment in robotaxi won’t pan out for years, if ever
  • in US, batteries are mostly from overseas and heavily tariffed
  • all the US protectionism won’t be enough if they lose China and European markets
  • other companies are finally catching up, while they wasted their efforts
  • semi has potential, but that’s a very conservative market and environmental regulations are getting rolled back so there’s no longer that push

There’s going to be blood at that company. A huge reset, in addition to musk leaving, is what they need

But if you put that energy into better securing your door, you’d have a much cheaper solution that doesn’t hurt firefighters (they may not be able to save your ass but that’s your choice) and make it much more difficult, time consuming, and noisy to get in.

One of those vertical bars into the floor ought to do it

While I’m on board, as a white cisgender male who can afford a lawyer, the problem comes when you add it to the other human rights violations of this administration. What are you going to do when guys in ski masks and overwhelming force break down your door and kidnap you out of the country. Then claim “it’s not possible to give everyone a hearing”, much less an appeal or any other due diligence? Nor can they send anyone back, even when they were wrong

It may only be for “those people” so far but we’ve arrived at gestapo midnight raids to fill concentration camps

And yet that ignores reality.

I have the worst timing …. I’ve been trying to eat my way down to an empty freezer. I bought a chest freezer in covid and kept it full ever since, but it really needs to be defrosted. I still have more stuff in there than can fit in all my coolers and in the fridge.

But maybe I should restock while I can and try again to defrost in four years

I wish I did that. My flatware is outstanding but of course they discontinued it right after I got it. I’m down to 5 spoons 🙁 and the Replacements.com price is higher than they were new

2 has the best tines but that huge duckbill handle is a non-starter. 5 has the best handle

We can hope there is a reckoning, a restoral of law and order, restoring Constitutional checks and balances, and justice for those who broke it

And yet they’re not just going about it the most boneheaded way they can think of, but have been actively killing off Biden era incentives to do what they claim they want.

If they actually cared about manufacturing locally, they would support those incentives, and support the infrastructure bill

At the time, news reports credited the scandal with forcing VW to start investing in EVs. Without that scandal, they’d still be struggling to get started

So many toddler toys and sporting goods on the curb in front of our house! Got my now college age kid to help.

We put up a huge “free” sign, and at least some things found a new home. Three bicycles, two portable soccer nets, and a pair of roller blades definitely gone but there’s just so much stuff that I really couldn’t say what’s no longer there

I’m disappointed the snow blower didn’t go. Yeah it’s older and needs service but it’s a nice two stage, self-propelled, auto-start model where bringing it back to life would be a fraction of the cost of buying something like that

I find this a bit weird, but I just fell asleep on the sofa while watching YouTube. The weird part was I had a very vivid dream that I was watching an entirely different YouTube video

This morning I made pancakes for my little one (ok, he’s a high school senior, and it was an egg, cantaloupe and some pancakes). His favorite is chocolate chip: I can do that!

As I was making them I realized I didn’t have enough chocolate chips. But I could still be the hero, I had mini-chips to make energy bites!

I don’t know if this counts as science, but I discovered the minis sink right to the bottom while full sized are easier to keep in suspension. The minis made it a lot harder to give each a consistent chocolate taste

The last several months, I’ve started watching YouTube.

I tried looking at what I’ve been watching:

  • lawn mowing
  • drain clearing
  • dog grooming

For those of us still impatiently waiting, what is your experience so far with “Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition”?

—- I ordered just 2 hours in but the vendor I used sold out in 21 minutes. I just found out I also missed the restock, so hopefully some time next month.

Waffles for the win (lemmy.world)

Slept in and made waffles for my kids …. I got too damn excited making Liege Waffles for the first time. The kids loved them but it’s a lot of work, even more cleanup, and molten sugar hurts like the dickens

Huge Costco trip (lemmy.world)

I haven’t been in about three months so I started running out of stuff. It almost got exciting, going while hungry and without a Christmas list. I should not have done that

And still no effing tissue boxes

The pop up reminder has been on my thermostat since October.

However the furnace couldn’t hold temperature and started short cycling so I had to. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the problem so I may need to call a guy (it’s always to replace the control board but I have yet to find a way to confirm that before spending $400 to do it myself)

Did not sleep in (lemmy.world)

Already failed my first goal for taking today off, by forgetting to turn off my alarm clock.

So my grand plan for using one of my precious days off is (drum roll, please) ….. taking my kid to a routine appointment that for some reason had to be in the middle of the day

Syrup from a can (lemmy.world)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

It’s the weekend, so I got up early, walked the dog and started thinking about what to make my kid for breakfast.

I spent way too long looking at a four hour recipe (why not, dinner is a smoked pork shoulder that I really need to get started asap) before giving it up

Started off normally: eggs over easy and sausage links. Let’s make the pancakes a little different with bananas and walnut, and top with fruit and nuts ….

Critical question: why do we buy a specific syrup for pancakes? It’s just sugar (or corn syrup). So I used the syrup from canned mangoes!!!! Tastes great but a bit thin and I didn’t use enough. It would be easy enough to thicken up, I’m sure. But why isn’t this the norm? We should have flavored syrup all the time, maybe save money over the maple stuff

Oh, and splurged with egg nog.

I generally use Lemmy through my phone browser: safari on iPhone. Starting a few weeks ago. I can no longer get to the primary url. When I try, the progress bar stops partway through, I get a long delay and eventually see “a problem repeatedly occurred on https://lemmy.world”.

I assumed there was some sort of update and was patient but it doesn’t appear to be getting fixed

As a workaround, I’ve been using https://old.lemmy.world

Is this a known problem or can someone help look into this?
