I don't think it qualifies as jumping on the bandwagon since, as you point, they've been doing it for the longest time anyway. This is just them reiterating their pledge and getting some good publicity out of it, which I think is perfectly fine.

She's being executed IF she doesn't pay back merely 3/4th of the money she embezzled, which the article says she still has. So in other words she gets to keep some of the shit she stole. That's the real scandal there.

Heaven's Vault is a great game with a good story, interesting world building and beautiful music, the execution is a bit clunky though. The good news is it seems a new addition to this universe is in development!
