Specifically, I was referring to medical professionals and hospital workers I knew. Detox units and rehab was a part of the system, but people who dealt with alcoholics and addicts of all types every day would still say it was a matter of will power and not an illness.

Old school safety razors. I like Wilkenson blades.

I used to work in public health, and even among educated people there was a lot of prejudice against the idea that addiction was beyond the individuals control.

Every state has different laws.

The reason "Florida Man" is such a popular trope is because the Sunshine State makes all arrest public information. So you can show the name and face of the suspect, which makes for a juicier story than an unnamed person with no picture.

New York law doesn't let the name become public [theoretically]

He was lucky enough to be born at the right time and in the right place, and thinks that he earned everything that was blindly handed to him.

At least he's smart enough to recognize a dumpster fire when it's happneing before his face

Here's another thought.

Humans who took in wolves were at an advantage over their neighbors. Wolves made great watchdogs, so the humans could sleep better, and helped in hunting so everyone ate better. People who refused to let wolves live with them would have been less likely to reproduce.

Domesticating dogs changed the humans.

It's like calling a high school gym teacher a "professional athlete" or someone with an associate degree 'Highly educated."

I know a nurse who flies ten times a year. All her trips combined don't add up to the fuel a private jet burns on one trip.

Moreover, she'd happliy use high speed rail if that were an option.

Look up the Gish Gallop.

It's a technique where a debater throws out an unending stream of lies, half truths, and irrelevant nonsense to overwhelm any logical response

Go get this book.

"Discover What You Are Best At" by Linda Gail. It's a series of self tests you can do in half a day, followed by a long list of jobs that use your particular skills.

I got the book when I was on worker's comp after an industrial accident. It pointed me at a job I'd never even considered. Turns out I really liked that job. It let me use my brains and paid a decent salary.

Think of it this way. A nurse and a hair stylist both need good people skills and dexterity. Two totally different types of work, but the same skill set.

If you have a job that lets you wake up on a rainy Monday and not hate going to work, you've solved most of your problems.

This is what we should be screaming about, not reopening Alcatraz.
