The shocking news this week was that a couple of admins of large Mastodon instances were talking with Meta (under NDA's!), so it seems your hope (and mine) will be in vain.

I live in the Netherlands and see about 150 different species of birds every year. That sounds like a lot, but even fifteen years of birding adds up to only about 270 species total. Perhaps this is because I never go somewhere to see a particular bird, I just go to nature reserves because they are beautiful. I have a small list of birds I very much would like to see, but I don't go out of my way to find them.
On Mastodon there was this whole thing about users calling themselves Twitter refugees, and people expressing their displeasure with the term. It does feel a bit inappropriate to equite youself with actual refugees. We're just moving from website to another.
