with nixos, the states of all the config files are collected into the nix configuration which you can modify manually.

Okay now that's cool. Now I'm getting it.

I guess that happens even if you install nix in another OS?

Maybe that's what I'm missing then. So with NIX, I need to make all config changes through it? I can't change any config files myself? Or start a program with a certain flag?

you can (at least in theory) copy your centralized exact configuration to another computer and get an OS that behaves exactly the same and has all the same packages.

As can you with grepping your history of apt commands? And back up that to a file of a few dozen kilobytes too.

Am I stupid?

I don't understand what this has that any other package manager, yum, apt etc doesn't.

dependencies stored in their own unique directory

Yeah so?

I tend to think that extensions for websites should be treated as feature requests by the website. Reddit for example should have just incorporated RES features.

One I liked was tags for users to I could remember who they are better.

Just ditch your .tmux.conf and use oh my tmux. It should have everything you're looking for.

Yes but there's skin white and then there's state of mind white. Irish and Italians for example weren't in the "white" club until relatively recently.

Bashir is #FFFFFF compared to O'Brien. The Irish working class guy is whiter than the genetically engineered Oxbridge English guy? I don't think this has been thought through.

Perpetually confused white guy is not Doctor Twink? I'm stuck on this one.

Ddg. It's shit but it's okay for my purposes most of the time.

Criminal engineer whines about his imprisonment for espionage even though it was done in the most humane way without even ageing him, abuses wife and daughter on release.

A soupçon of ineffability.

I was especially taken by Ho Chi Minh's quote from On revolutionary morality and thought it would be great to have a comm for discussion on each of these. It's not something I'd like to run but is anyone else interested?

One theory I've heard about the accelerating of the worsening conditions of western proletariat is that the USSR used to provide a bulwark against things getting too bad. People would point at the USSR and the illusion that capitalism was better for individual prosperity would collapse in comparison. Then, with the USSR gone things have been deteriorating for the past ~30 years.

If that is true, even somewhat, why haven't we seen a similar effect from China's example? Is the theory simply wrong? Maybe western capitalism is just unable to even offer scraps from the table at this point. Maybe people are unaware of how things are in China? Could we dare to expect that China's example will force a lifting of the boot from our necks?

While I very much sympathise with the stance of always suspecting the USA first and foremost whenever anything happens in geopolitics, I'm not sure if I credit it with this much competence.

A main question for Ukraine since it became an independent state was who or what could potentially guarantee its security.
