@Thorry84 Yeah .. I think their apps even offer it as a feature so you don't have to pick up the device.

@Thorry84 @semperverus I'm often surprised how behind the times the US is. I mean chequebooks anyone? Card swiping? Overnight payment systems? Feels like a step back to the 90's

@Thorry84 @semperverus Im just checking . Are you discussing what is basically ASDA shop and go.. or the same service with a different name offered by every major UK supermarket ? asda.com/instore/scan-and-go

@Godnroc @Natal Something like this that you could flash a custom ROM on?

@warmaster I was just agreeding and suggesting that their monetisation strategy is licencing hence the reason for improvements for Enterprise clusters rather than focusing on Self Hosting is the money.

@Dave @liv Its horses for courses. Pumped hydro is great in areas with suitable terrain and for longer term storage. In other areas / applications batteries make sense. NZ is of course capital constrained. It would be great to do everything altogether all at once but its a journey right and you have to bring people along with you.

There is also a weird effect with new tech where delaying actually makes economic sense if costs are going down so you get the most bang for your buck by holding off for a bit.

@warmaster @Shimitar Their licencing suggests they are targetting larger infra.

Anyone willing to recomend a provider who offers #domainname #nextcloud, #email and #wordpress #saas ? Ideally #uk or #eu. Its for a sporting club. #google and #microsoft are too expensive for about 30 users.

@catloaf This I need to learn more about. In terms of managing networks/routing how would that work - Use #openwrt in a container?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

@bizdelnick Oh I love Openwrt andnfor router functionality its great. But I am trying to have my cake and eat it by seeing what applications I could also selfhost on the box as well. e.g. anything such as email, file sharing, activitypub server or homeassistant

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

@poVoq Yeah I was thinking that the overhead of a Hypervisor was a bit much hence something that is a bit more lightweight.

- I've just bought a #BananaPi R3. As an avid user of #Openwrt and #Yunohost I'm thinking that it would make sense to have the capabilities of both on that device since it has space for an #SSD - Does any one know of any projects that are bringing the features of both types of services together into one solution. i.e a lightweight home server and configurable router in one?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

@Lemmchen oh and today my R3 arrived. Of course I'm now away for a week so setup will have to wait till i get back.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

@Lemmchen So this week's update. I bit the bullet and bought a BananaPi-R3 and two SFP adaptors so I had six ethernet ports. and well .. the BPR3 has disappeared off into Courier Limbo stuck in a warehouse somewhere after they said I wasn't home when they tried to deliver it. Grr.. But I have now got my OpenWRT WDS wireless and wired extenders running and all my devices are updated to at least v23. I have started building out my DMZ for #yunohost..

The following was asked on a #Mastodon forum on #Reddit - I replied and a sort of converation started. I felt that it wa better to have the discussion where others with valuable inside could chip in so I have- with the OP's permission posted the following:

For years I have the same question:

Is it useful to create your own Mastodon instance or any other fediverse instance?

Many admins say it is a lot of work and they put a lot of effort, money and energy in it. Some even close their instance after few years, because it is just too much.

After the new political development in the USA, the fediverse got a new wave of interested people from all over the world, but the question stays.

In my opinion it makes only sense if you already have a community, like, if you're an influencer or part of an NGO or similar projects with several people, who will support you creating and maintaining it with money and own time.

What do you think and do you own an instance or work on one?

- This coming week along with regular working groups meeting #Mifos are also have another volunteering call on 24th April at 2pm UTC. you can register for the call here:
us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

Mifos is built on #Apache #fineract (also Open source ) - fineract.apache.org/

- I really appreciate the OpenWrt forum but also like using an ActivityPub based account to browse posts on topics I am interested in.

I understand that forum OpenWrt uses Discourse which has some capabilities to integrate with activityPub services and have suggested in the forum that they are used but there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm to do so.

Im probably not good at promoting the benefits or addressing points of concern.

What are people's thoughts?

- I'm not amazingly skilled when it comes to Linux but I'm working through installing and testing #imapsync - imapsync.lamiral.info on Debian following these instructions imapsync.lamiral.info/INSTALL.… - I'm a bit confused as it talks about example config files in a configuration directory but being a bit of a dunce I'm not sure where these would have been installed and where I should be creating config files for imapsync. My objective is to eventually sync my Gmail across to another email account I have via IMAP.

- Im looking for a chat app that I can use with others mid flight. Ideally id be able to send them the apk to install while in flightmode (with Bluetooth) - Yes we are too cheap to pay for seats together. But in our defence we fly alot.

I think its great that independent media is available via satellite tv for Russian speakers. My thought - Should we be including a rqnge of russian language entertainment in those packages to attract audiences?

Im interested if people are finding anything witha similar form factor to Alexa Shows or Lenovo smart clocks that can run Linux ?

Im particularly interested in something with a decent speaker, integrated camera and display. Ideally 12v DC or POE powered.

I'm also looking for self hosted apps with pushtotalk or Dropin features.

I know I could probably cobble something together but ideally something well formed but would be cool.

What are people's thoughts / suggestions?
