yeah that's how alt text works. you cannot embed it inside of an image AFAIK. It's a feature of the web, more precisely HTML
alsaaas
I think that is a very reasonable addition, thank you for your constructive feedback!
I edited my comment before I saw your reply; yeah we should clarify that maybe
It was meant more in the form of reaction gifs/videos you might use and using a simple tag to describe them so ppl can understand what you are posting while using a screen reader
To maybe give an example:
I am by no means an expert on writing alt text, but that's what I did:

It took me a few seconds to write
Ofc describing more elaborate reactions or videos used in comments is difficult, the main focus of the rule is intended to be for the main content on here (ie. posts). For files you share in the comments a simple summary should be enough if they're too complex.
When you are sharing a video on YouTube, the summary should already be included by the creator in the title and description. Ofc it should not fall on the commenter to do that if it's lacking
Are you familiar with Mastodon and how people add alt text to most images shared there? This is meant as a codified analogue to that. If you have specific suggestions, please feel free to share. As I said in another comment: nothing is set in stone about this rule
Nothing is set in stone here, do you mean transcription of videos?
Bc videos are virtually never shared here and the format of YouTube/Discord memes - type videos is not rly in the scope of this community anyway
If you mean videos shared in comments, we should maybe clarify that those are out of scope
I hate liking this
angy updoot
Enough internet for today
? I don't think I understand what you mean >w<
ye I actually listened to the Oktober revolution part of that podcast before switching to "The History of Rome"
also the host of "The History of Byzantium" is doing quite a good job too, would recommend
though I do understand Duncan for setting the cut-off point where he did instead of the early 15th century 💀
exactly, that's why I love it here
I may not be an anarchist, but I'm not a Dengist either, so I get massive headaches on both Hexbear and grad with their unconditional support for state capitalism. There are good (or rather less worse) aspects to China when compared to the US, but dogmatically supporting it to the hilt just reeks
(not to shit on Hexbear too much, they have quite a handful of good and more or less genuinely leftist coms; I just stay clear of the more political/theoretical ones)
and even as a revolutionary Marxist (read: "non denominational" lmal) I feel welcome and think that this instance is a really nice corner of the Lemmyverse
(even with it being largely anarchist/libertarian socialist. not in the sense that I have a problem with those ideologies, more that I feel that the difference in strategy and tactics doesn't cause as much enmity as it might in other online spaces)
also the free/libre and pirate spirit makes it an even better place <3
You do bring up a valid — if niche — argument tho. Mb adding smth like "if you have serious issues with writing alternative text, please DM one of the mods, or say so after posting or under our comment reminding you of this rule. We will gladly help you come up with alternative texts and waive the reminders in the comments. Or post the our suggestions under it (depending on whether you have an issue with outing yourself publicly, you don't have to state a specific reason if you don't want to. A trust based system would be our go to)"
ofc this isn't the concise version, just ad hoc writeup
