This country's system of governments is a joke that stopped being funny

Rule #1: Never Admit You’re Violating a Court Order

...

Rule #2: Accidents Happen and Can Be Great Excuses for Violating Court Orders

...

Rule #3: You Get to Interpret the Order

...

Rule #4: Always Appeal

...

Rule #5: Go After the Judge

...

Rule #6: Keep Your Lawyers Barefoot and Ignorant

...

Rule #7: Always Make Sure They’re Relieved You Didn’t Do Worse

State Police on Wednesday announced the firing of Trooper Michael Proctor, who’d been suspended without pay for months over crude and misogynistic texts he sent about Karen Read that came to light during her first trial.

...

Read, 45, has pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree murder for allegedly backing her SUV into [Boston Police Officer John] O’Keefe in a drunken rage in Canton in January 2022. Her lawyers say she was framed, and her first trial ended in a hung jury. Her retrial is scheduled to begin April 1.

tl;dr this guy did a horrible thing, but based on the number of brain injuries you can read about him suffering over the course of his lifetime I really doubt he was legally competent, and either way I think the death penalty is dumb and does as much to retraumatize victims as offer closure

Either way, please wear a helmet when riding motorcycles and yell at your lawmakers to make sure neonatal units have the best possible resources to maybe prevent people like Wendell Grissom from going so far off the rails

... the growing number of lawsuits is forcing Maryland legislators to reconsider aspects of the sweeping law. Democratic Del. C.T. Wilson, the architect of the Child Victims Act, proposed changes that could cap damages and clarify how abuse claims are defined.

Wilson’s office declined Stateline’s interview request and did not respond to emailed questions seeking to confirm his legislative proposals.

State officials have said the financial consequences of the lawsuits could be devastating for the state, which faces a $3 billion budget gap for fiscal year 2026.

As the Trump administration battled with a federal judge over the use of wartime powers to deport alleged gang members to El Salvador, the White House X account on Monday posted a video of migrants being handcuffed and sent away, to the soundtrack of the 1998 Semisonic hit “Closing Time,” a song that’s often associated with the end of a party.

“You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here @CBP,” the White House posted, with musical note emojis — a reference to the song lyrics. The video was also posted on Team Trump’s TikTok and reposted by the official account for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with the caption: “It’s closing time. We are making America safe again.”

...

... immigration experts... described the use of humor as dehumanizing by minimizing the impact and repercussions of the government’s aggressive actions. They added that images of migrants in shackles boarding deportation flights contribute to Trump’s broad portrayal of undocumented immigrants as criminals, even though there’s little evidence that they commit crimes at a higher rate than U.S. citizens.

67,000 white South Africans have expressed interest in Trump’s plan to give them refugee status

Have they? Because I see a news story about an unofficial private business organization that was founded in Atlanta in 2020 handing a list of purported names to the South African embassy. They very easily could have made all these names up as a publicity stunt hoping it would land some of their members new business from racist Anericans.

Constituent Kristin Fellows, 62, asked the Democrats how they are pushing back against Musk and President Donald Trump.

“We know that you are against these current awful happenings going on in the world, but it is simply not enough for you to repeatedly tell us that you are,” Fellows said, according to the Associated Press, and the question was met with a round of applause from the audience.

“My job is to be more than just an activist. It is to answer the call when there’s an immigration raid and we need to figure out where our people are,” Slotkin said. “All of those things require me to be more than just an AOC.”

Slotkin ought to know where "our people" are since she voted for legislation requiring any immigrant who's baselessly charged with petty nonsense like shoplifting to be detained (archived).

Thank you for posting those related articles because if just had to go off the OP alone I would have no earthly idea which terrifying dystopian move was being discussed

But calling her a tourist in the headline is a clear misrepresentation

Sure thing, and if you stay over at a friend's house and make the bed in the morning it's their legal obligation to report you for not obtaining a proper license for your housecleaning business first /s

Anyone willing to encourage tourism to America by being such a guide would probably take your money and then find a reason to get you arrested by ICE anyway. Not like you could take it up with a consumer protection agency now.

They are absolutely desperate to fill their quotas, they're selfish cowards who know how quickly their Dear Leader will throw them under the bus if they don't

I couldn't find a complete transcript of the interview anywhere, but I did find a slightly longer CBC article discussing it with more quotes (archived).

That is important context, thank you. I still kind of think that taking an assertive stand against what the United States is doing to Germany citizens is the kind of clear call this minister probably ought to feel empowered to make, but on the other hand I have a deep appreciation for government workers who feel their obligations to upholding democratic systems, so this is a hard call to make I suppose.

Interestingly, only young Trump supporters in our study became more likely to vote after Trump’s first election.

This is your country on neoliberal Democratic party leadership

e; and unchecked voter suppression laws coming out of Republican state governments (but as to who that check will be, see my original comment)
