I haven't had the best luck with vanishing point nibs but do have the bodies - do you know if they're cross compatible?

Right, but you need the biggest possible image and then the ui will downscale it as needed.
I've really liked most Robert Oster inks and haven't had trouble in my Lamy 2000 fine nib - though that nib is closer to a medium which may be helping.
Iroshizuku ink has never let me down.
I love that it can have a red sheen. Fantastic saturation, too.

I felt inspired to draw a sun but I generally prefer to focus on handwriting and inks. :)
