I kind of agree but I also kind of don't.

I thoroughly enjoy well produced content by the likes of Veritasium, Captain Disillusion, Mark Rober, Lemmino, Potato Jet and more. I do see where you're coming from tho

There still are people doing it as a hobby and some even consider it a hobby despite the high production quality. Those channels are harder to find, though and that is kind of sad. I can't help but wonder what would've been if we hadn't commercialised the web.

I'm not really a fan of sponsor block. It's pretty much the most privacy respecting way of advertising and safe income for the creator. Seems like a win−win. I don't like watching ads but I'd rather watch a sponsor segment than a YouTube ad

NewPipe ftw though

I run /e/OS with a custom app store, App Lounge. It combines F-Droid and the Play Store via Aurora. It even embeds Exodus Privacy Ratings and is simply awesome. You can even log in with your Google account and download paid apps that way. Pretty neat.

Bro. We just don't want some stupid money hungry company harshing our mellow here.

It isn't a new thing for companies to take a cool and open thing and just fuck it right up. Read this: https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html You may learn something...

That is weird... Point taken

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (6 children)

Startpage (basically a proxy for Google afaik), Murena Spot, SearX, Qwant, SwissCows

I use Qwant and Startpage for most things, but tend towards Qwant due to speed.

I primarily use Startpage for image search, though, because you can specify exact resolutions.

In my phone Murena Spot was always the default search engine and it's fine. I switch between it and Qwant Lite.

When I want someone to search more privately without getting different results, I always recommend Startpage.

I primarily use the first two but the rest works great, too

Q: Is my phone supported?

A: You can check here.

Q: Does /e/OS kill apps in the same way Android does?

A: Yes, /e/OS is based on Android and treats background apps the same way as regular Android.

Q: How do I keep grayscale mode enabled even after reboot?

A: You set the “simulate color space” option in Developer Options to “monochromatic”.

Q: Can you lock the bootloader?

A: Yes, you can. You need to do it via fastboot. Changing the “OEM Unlocking” option in Developer Options doesn't lock the bootloader.

Q: Any way to check app availability before installing /e/OS?

A: Not that I know of. However, it is highly unlikely that an app is not available. Do note, though, that apps that rely heavily on Google Play Services may not work as intended.

Problem: Can't install /e/OS on OnePlus 7 Pro (guacamole).

Solution:

  • Flashed the phone back to OOS9 using the MSM tool.
  • Upgraded to OOS11 through OTAs (not sure this step is required).
  • Followed the LineageOS installation instructions through the installation of the recovery partition. This includes flashing dtbo.img and vbmeta.img as well as the boot.img file containing the recovery. Sourced all three files from the LineageOS repository for the OP7P.
  • Booted into recovery. This took me to the Lineage recovery screen. At this point I am further into the process than I could get with the /e recovery. Switched to the /e/os instructions from this point, and ADB sideloaded the e-1.8.1 stable system image. The installer warned that I was backdating the OS. I said OK.
  • Started the system using the reboot command in the recovery menu. After a half hour on the boot animation, powered the phone back and rebooted into recovery, which turned out to be /e/ recovery.
  • Booted back into system and waited again. Still no luck.
  • Rebooted into recovery, which is now a working /e/os recovery.
  • Did a factory reset/data wipe and repeated the adb sideload of the OS.After the sideload completed, rebooted into system. /e/os started in less than a minute.

Q: Why do push notifications sometimes not work?

A: This may have to do with battery optimization. You can set the battery usage to unrestricted in the App Info of the app.

Q: 4G from new foreign sim card won't work?

A: /e/OS community post.

Q: Can App Lounge be installed on other ROMs?

A: Yes, you can download the APK here but your mileage may vary.

Q: What's the difference between Lineage OS and /e/OS?

A: /e/OS includes microG services (a way to use Google Play Services in a private way). /e/OS is also easier to install with the Easy Installer. /e/OS is also more polished and has the App Lounge which combines Aurora (Play Store) and F-Droid (Open Source) app stores in one and allows for installation of paid apps by logging in to a Google Account.

Q: Where are the emojis on the standard keyboard?

A: You can hold the return key to open the emoji keyboard.

Off-topic: If you don't like the bliss launcher (I don't, either), you can install other launchers like Nova or Neo.
