This is Europe, not the USA, where everyone can go around everywhere with a deadly weapon, right?

The world’s best-selling vehicle model is a Chinese bike

@shifter created a nice video where it tells how the story of that bike model crosses the history of the country, while looking for an exemplar to try personally.

Even China, after moving away from the bike, is getting closer, even if the vehicle has changed a lot, and between bikes and mopeds, there is a whole spectrum of undefined vehicles.

Actually the main link is to the video itself. This post is from Lemmy, so, if youk look the oroginal post, you can see that the object of the post is the link to youtube and the link to the mastodon toot isnjust a text. But from your maston account you s just the second one... The "bad" part of the fediverse, I guess

What would a TV ad promoting alternatives to driving look like? What if people who love cycling and progressive transportation reclaimed ideas like freedom, independence and even patriotism? We decided to give it a shot. Check out our new video, "America, It's Just Like Riding a Bike."

I don't think that Reddit is so much better. The interface at the moment is full of ads that make i confusing. The only thing is the community search that is a bit cumbersome, but this is due to federation, and understood. On the other hand the federation with Mastodon/Friendica/whatever is super-powerful, hand honestly enjoyable

Thank you for all your work

What if we handle road safety as general safety?

The hierarchy hazard controls is a de facto standard for determining which measures to take in the presence of risks. The principles can be (and I would argue that they should be) applied to road safety.

From the most effective to the least effective measure, we have:

  • Elimination: Avoid road trips. Of course it is rarely possible.

  • Substitution: Replace dangerous vehicles with non-hazardous vehicles. That is, cars should be limited

  • Engineering controls: people are isolated from risks: cycle paths, sidewalks everywhere, speed bumps, raised crossings, narrowing of the roads

  • Administrative controls: speed limits, 30 km/h cities, speed cameras, training courses.

And last and most definitely least:

  • personal protective equipment: they are the least effective, to be used only if there is no possibility of applying other measures: helmets.

Those who push for certain measures do not understand anything about safety, and thus would start from the bottom of the hierarchy.

Wapo journalist verifies that robotaxis fail to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalk 7 out of 10 times. Waymo admitted that it follows "social norms" rather than laws.

The reason is likely to compete with Uber, 🤦

So car share is increasing in italian cities too, as you can see in the following plot. Reality is that when there is no alternative, people will use cars. This is visibile for example by the facr that Milan is the city with best publc transit, while cities inbthe south are pretty bad

Italy is a car infested country. I would love to know impressions of fellow users from other countries that visit Italy: do you see this?

We rank in the low part for public transport and rails (except high-speed trains). Which is not surprsing

Moreover, automotive industry is sinking in Italy, so there is not even the justification of helping "economy", for pushing on cars so much.

Finally, there are many more cars than car licenses in Italy. Which, IMHO, is completely absurd

People on bikes may be rude and may not follow the rules, but can't be aggressive.

When a man with a .45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with a pistol will be a dead man.

Shifter is a youtube/peertube channel with lot of great insights on cycling.

Every year he collects stuff to gift to bike commuters and I there are some good suggestion in it.

Edit: to clarify: the message in the ad is actually ironic/satirical, mocking the advice for cyclists to wear high-viz at night.

It uses the same logic but inverts the parts and responsabilities, by suggesting to motorists (not cyclists) to apply bright paint on their cars.

So this ad is not pro or against high-viz, it's against victim blaming
