They must have changed the location demand it because of the complaints they were getting.

Mine has some features that aren't available without the app, but I only really cared about the end of cycle signal and the refrigerator temperature. Zigbee sensors provide the same function without requiring an Internet connection.

"[But] when you’re dealing with veterans, you have to be more intentional with your actions."

Translation from Republican bullshit: "I voted for Trump to hurt other people. He wasn't supposed to hurt me."

Asshole.

Right in line with the "Life Until Birth" mantra of the GQP assholes.

LG pulls some of this BS too. When I tried it a few years ago, the LG app required always-on precise location permission to function at all. The smart features on my washer and refrigerator also require them to always be connected to the Internet but those features were more limited that what Jeff describes. I was willing to allow the appliances Internet access from an isolated subnet, but there is no way I'm going to allow LG access to all of my phone's location data just so I can run their crappy, barely functional app.

In Mexico Bosch is even more customer hostile. My Bosch water heater had to be replaced because Bosch discontinued the repair parts needed to fix it. It's only 3 years old.

Have had espresso machines for years and can confirm it can be very difficult to find shops that do repairs and have replacement parts. Good luck with the startup.

Is anyone else just done with CAPTCHAS? I refuse to deal with them at all anymore unless I absolutely need to get to the content they're blocking.

Maybe the ultimate test for a human is when the page is abandoned when a CAPTCHA pops up.

Icons cannot be removed from the launcher screen, they can only be combined into folder. The folders cannot be hidden or removed. Preinstalled programs cannot be uninstalled or disabled. Nothing works until the tablet is registered with Amazon. There is no app drawer. It's possible to install another launcher, but it's not possible to use it because Amazon has hardwired the home button to their launcher. (There used to be ways around that but Amazon has systematically disabled each of them.) Their Silk browser is terrible. Most every Amazon app provided is terrible.

I get that it's cheap and there will be significant compromises, but at least some of Amazon's apps should be somewhat comparable to non-Amazon apps.

I've gotten around some of this by loading the Play store and F-Droid, and blocking Amazon's servers but it's clear that Amazon's tablets are not only cheap but they're really low effort products built for Amazon rather than the purchaser.

I understood the reference, but my grandmother (and others I've known who've said it) didn't give a crap about either the bible or ancient Rome.

I'd bet those benefits also come with a little hit of serotonin making hand washing slightly addictive.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Perhaps at some point, but my grandmother used to say it when she was fed up with something and I can guarantee she wasn't referencing anything to do with ancient Rome.

We need some studies about the benefits of hand washing while wearing rubber gloves. As easy as it is to fool ourselves I'd bet that those benefits still exist to some degree.

I think it's exactly the opposite and there's lots of information and multple interviews that strongly suggest that. IMO Musk is full-on Nazi scum and lives in a nearly impermeable bubble, so much so that he thinks he has toned it down to what will pass in society. It seems he read the room wrong either way.

If there’s anything we’ve learned from the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that washing our hands is one of the best ways to protect ourselves from the dangers of contagion. But hand washing does much more than cleanse us physically; sometimes it can wipe our mental slate clean. Here are some examples of what a bit of soap can do for our psyches.

Zhang Yazhou was sitting in the passenger seat of her Tesla Model 3 when she said she heard her father's panicked voice: The brakes don't work! Approaching a red light, her father swerved around two cars before plowing into an SUV and a sedan and crashing into a large concrete barrier.

Stunned, Zhang gazed at the deflating airbag in front of her. She could never have imagined what was to come: Tesla sued her for defamation for complaining publicly about the car's brakes — and won. A Chinese court ordered Zhang to pay more than $23,000 in damages and publicly apologize to the $1.1 trillion company.

Two months after UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson was killed, UnitedHealth Group has hired a defamation law firm to take on social media posts that it claims are untrue and reckless, according to Bloomberg Law.

The man who was convicted in the 2022 attack on the husband of House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday following his state trial.

DePape's early morning break-in at the Pelosi home almost exactly two years ago on October 28, 2022 -- just days before the 2022 midterm elections -- sent shockwaves through the United States and was attributed to the predictable effects of increasingly demonizing political rhetoric.

The attack on then-82-year-old Paul Pelosi was captured on police bodycam video after officers responded to his 911 call and found him struggling with DePape, who then bludgeoned Pelosi with a hammer.

The life sentence on state charges is on top of the 30-year sentence DePape received for his federal conviction.

Since people seem to have missed this one, unsealed in the Smith filing:

-Trump used a burner phone, routed through a foreign country to contact Michigan house speaker.

-He tried to pressure the speaker in this off book call.

-Speaker McCarthy knew about the burner phone line.

-The phone showed up as “Spam Risk Egypt” on caller ID.

Cuba’s government has spent the last days attempting to get the island’s national grid functioning after repeated island-wide blackouts. Without power, sleep becomes difficult in the heat, food spoils and the water supply fails.

Parts of Cuba’s communist system still function: the municipality sent Maria food. “We are three families here,” she said. “I live alone, the lady who lives next to me [does] also, and there are two children, the children’s mother, her aunt and an elderly man.”

A week after the blackout, the island has returned to the status quo ante with regular power cuts of up to 20 hours a day. But the crisis has left a deep, melancholy dread about the future.

Should Donald Trump fail a second time to be re-elected he faces the very real possibility of jail time and massive financial penalties due to the sheer volume of criminal cases and civil lawsuits that are on hold until after the election.

That is the opinion of Syracuse University law professor Greg Germain who explained in an interview with Newsweek that the former president's only path to get out from under the federal cases he now faces is to beat Vice President Kamala Harris in less than two weeks and then push the Department of Justice to drop the cases filed against him.

As Germain stated, the multiple federal cases Trump is facing are solid and his only path to victory may be having them shut down.

A former Florida sheriff who moved to Russia amid an FBI investigation is a Kremlin-backed propagandist responsible for viral deepfake videos and misinformation targeting Kamala Harris’s campaign, according to European intelligence documents reviewed by the Washington Post.

The GRU, Russia’s military intelligence service, gave funding to John Mark Dougan, the operator of several fake news websites. According to documents reviewed by the Post, Dugan was responsible for several websites that seemingly published fake local news, including DC Weekly, Chicago Chronicle, and Atlanta Observer.

Dell Outlet on Ebay has the Latitude 3140 laptop, an excellent Home Assistant platform on sale for $176. A Raspberry Pi 5 or NUC with the hardware needed for these features would cost far more. The same machine is nearly 2x more on the regular Dell Outlet site.

Debian 12 supported out of box - no additional drivers needed
Fast N200 Intel processor - ~60% faster than a Raspberry Pi 5
256gb SSD
8GB ram
Advanced BIOS options
OpenVino support for Frigate
BIOS battery management. Can limit charge to 75% for years of battery life
6 hour indicated battery life at 75% charge
Very low power usage - ~6 watts when running Home Assistant with several USB devices
Fanless and completely silent
Built like a tank

Negatives:

Built like a tank. Chunky for a small laptop
No integrated Ethernet port
Mediocre screen

I bought one of these last year when it was on sale from another vendor and have been really happy with it, especially for the cost.
