Thanks for checking this out! Below you'll find a few different resources to help you figure things out around here, but also feel free to ask any questions in the comments below. The aim of this post is to provide a reference point for new and returning people, so save or bookmark it and return to it either to ask questions or simply refresh your memory.

Is there an app?
For sites using Lemmy, yes, several in fact. One of the more often recommended ones for both iOS and Android is the Voyager app. Another cross-platform option is the Thunder app. For questions and discussions of other apps for sites using Lemmy, you may check out [email protected].

For sites using Mbin, and for Android and Linux there's currently the Interstellar app.

For sites using Piefed, there are no apps, but it's built to work well as a Progressive Web App.

Where's support?
Each site and app may have its respective support community and/or support contact info, which will differ accordingly, so this is out of scope for this post. Nevertheless you may ask for guidance below, and there's also the following community for people new to Lemmy in particular: [email protected]

For help and feedback on the software behind the sites, it's a little easier:

Where do I find new communities/subreddits?
Ask here, or [email protected]! You may also browse the front page of your chosen site (such as Lemmy World, Piefed Social, Kbin Earth, or the like), which will usually display the variety of communities people there may have subscribed to.

Otherwise, you may subscribe to the following communities:

Lastly, you may check out Lemmyverse to search even more broadly.

Can I make my own community?
It depends on the site you signed up on, but usually yes. Generally it's better to do so from a computer than a smartphone though, as you're less likely to run into odd issues that way. If you find you can't for some reason, ask below (mentioning whether trying from computer/smartphone and using apps or not) and someone may try to help you out, directing you to your site's support or otherwise.

If all has gone well, you may want to subscribe to [email protected] to talk to others working on building up communities.

Why is it asking me to sign in to post a comment?
You may have followed a link to a different site using Lemmy (or the like) than the one you registered on without realizing it, which at present is an unfortunate rough edge of things here. Signing up to one site doesn't provide a single sign-on to other sites using Lemmy or similar.

What's federation?
Without getting into the weeds, it's different websites sharing content between themselves to enable interaction with each other. Unless you're deep into all this or issues arise, ideally this should fade into the background. It's talked about a lot currently because many here are deep into it, and a lot of the software built around it is still developing, so unfortunately issues do still occur.

Any other questions or resources to add, the comments are open!

This is not a comprehensive list by any means, and is why I'm featuring this post and leaving it open to comments. I may update this as people make suggestions, and I encourage others to make their own variations on this list in the comments or in their respective versions of this community.

Also to clarify some terms here, by active I'm aiming for at least some commenting on recent-ish posts, not merely recent posts, and by the topic names...I'll let the linked communities serve as examples.

Regardless of your standing with regards to the Israel-Palestine war, this is an unexpected development as now legacy networks are finally paying serious attention to criticisms of Wikipedia after years of neglect.

Any observers who've been following Wikipedia-related rabbit holes long enough would know that criticism of Wikipedia is for a long time dominated by the political fringes (i.e. far-right) and many Wikipedia critics normally gets ridiculed out of the room as they're been characterized as "fascists" and "anti-knowledge". Now it's like a dream come true for those critics as they seemingly get vindicated on television networks.

Two days ago, I became an unwitting victim of Amazon's lack of policing their 3rd party marketplace ecosystem. I hope I can get this in front of a few more eyeballs to save people from the experience I am now in. Here's how it went down.

Thursday, AMD dropped the Radeon RX 9070 and Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU. I won't bore you with the details, but I hoped to get one, by Friday I still hadn't and started shopping for a GPU from last generation. I setup a price alert on a few models and went to sleep. I woke at 3am to an alert (I forgot to silence my phone) that one of the models was on sale at a 27% discount from a 3rd party seller, and I groggily added to my cart. However, when added to my cart, the price jumped to 15% over MSRP. I removed and went back to the product page, refreshed, and saw the same discounted price. I copied the link and opened it in another mobile browser and the discounted price was there. I added it back to my cart and the price again increased by $150.

I contacted support, and they told me to make the purchase at the inflated price, and when it arrived, I would be given a discount retroactively by Amazon. I did so, put my phone on DnD and went back to sleep.

When I woke up, I checked my phone and saw I had two emails from Amazon. One was a price alert on another GPU, at the same deep discount from another seller. I clicked the link and saw the same price for the same GPU. This time, I was more awake, so I clicked the link to go to the "Gigabyte Store" and saw the same listing there. This one must be real, then right? I added it to my cart and the price remained discounted. I clicked the seller name and saw they had several positive reviews about fast shipping, great prices, etc.

Here's what happened next. I purchased the second GPU at the correct price and went to cancel the previous order. However, when I opened the orders page, I saw that it was already marked as shipped. Strange, I thought. It's only been five hours. So I couldn't cancel the order, but Amazon CS assured me earlier that I would receive the discount, so I shrugged and decided maybe I would sell the extra one, or give it to my son.

So I purchased the second GPU. Then I checked the second email. As I read, my face got hot, and my arms and hands began to tingle. Here is the email:

Hello,

We are writing in relation to your Amazon.com order #REDACTED.
We wanted to inform you that the seller of your order is no longer active on Amazon.com.

If you are expecting an order and you do not receive it within 3 days of the estimated delivery date, or if you have any other issue with your order, please report the problem. Our team will determine if you are eligible for a refund.

1. Go to “Your Orders”
2. Locate your order in the list and click “Problem with order”.

Amazon.com

Uh-oh. Wait. Amazon has seller accounts that can just ...disappear? And the only recourse is to wait to see if they ship the item to you? Here is where some of you may think, "this sounds familiar." I hadn't seen that before, and I trusted the Amazon system, foolishly.

I find the seller profile linked on my order page for the first GPU. The seller feedback (that I had never even seen before, as I guess I have always used Amazon fulfillment up until now) was five reviews. One 5-stars, and the remaining four were 1-star, all with SCAM in the text.

I think to myself, 'it's a good thing I bought that other GPU... that had the same ...price. SHIT."

I go to my second GPU order and click the seller profile. The previous glowing reviews are still there, but so is a new one with the current date that reads:

I have been waiting since the first part of December. If I didn’t need them I wouldn’t have ordered them. I had to order from a different company and get them within a week.

It's now Tuesday. Both items have "shipped" but with no tracking number, claiming:

Strange. I've always had tracking for USPS packages in the past. Oh, and my shipping date? Changed from March 12 to April 30.

All this is typical for this type of scam, it seems. I was oblivious to it until it happened to me. Here are the signs:

  1. Steeply discounted price on a popular item
  2. 3rd party seller with relatively low review count
  3. Fulfillment completely outside of Amazon
  4. Order is marked as shipped extremely fast
  5. Shipping will not include tracking number
  6. Seller closes their Amazon account

Obviously, if you get past #3, you've already been scammed.

Now, after a day of research into this scam, I can also share the following that helps clear up how and why this works like this.

Sellers don't get paid immediately. They have a regular payout interval, usually a week or two weeks. So they need to keep the customer waiting long enough to collect their funds before Amazon can step in. But, lucky for them, Amazon never steps in. As I discovered, their SOP is to have the customer wait until the delivery date (which was four days, then suddenly fifty+ days) before any attempt to make the customer whole is offered. This delay works in favor of the scammers, since they have time to collect their money before Amazon bothers to consider there is any fraudulent activity.

All this info in my belt, I called Amazon CS last night and asked for a walk-through of the two purchases, the seller accounts, and the policy. The CS agent viewed the seller profiles and confirmed they seemed scammy, and that they were both no longer active, but still eligible for payout. They could not confirm that any products had ever been truly offered, let alone received. At the end of the call it was clear that Amazon CS hands are tied. They have policies, and they won't budge. I won't even be eligible for a refund until after May 3, which is just under two months from my order date.

I didn't do anything wrong. I was supposed to be protected by Amazon, and I wasn't. They aren't supposed to be like eBay, where you have to carefully research every seller, because the platform invites fraud. This is the biggest e-tailer in the world (or is that Ali Express?), who positions itself as the most customer-focused company in the world. Unfortunately, they are either not interested in countering this fraud, or they are too slow-moving to keep up with the fraudsters. Or maybe I'm not the customer. Maybe the seller is. Or maybe it's the advertisers. But not me, anymore.

What I will do differently in the future:

  1. Stay off of Amazon.

They are in the business of making money, and even Chinese scammers make the company money. They may have to refund me my $1,000, but not for almost two months, and they got my payment into their bank account immediately. When they pay the scammer (and they will), they get to keep a percentage (30% now? More? I forget).

Obviously, I have noticed that many products on the marketplace there seem scammy, but I wasn't prepared to see one hosted on the GPU manufacturer's official store front. Oh, and the CS agent also told me that there is no way to assure that I can even get the product I purchased from another seller. That is to say, I asked if instead of a refund, I could have them just get me the GPU I ordered at MSRP (or even better, the price that scammed me, twice), and they said no.

I'm okay. I used my credit card, and I'm protected from fraud if it comes to that. To those who wouldn't have that option and can't be without $1,000 for two months, I would recommend you stay away from any marketplaces that allow 3rd party sellers on, as there is too much incentive to scam like this. There is ZERO risk to the scammer. Newegg (owned by Amazon) also allows 3rd party sellers , and if you look, you can find feedback there about the same scam.

Good luck out there.

I posted it here, in general discussion, because I wanted to spark some conversation about socialism that seems very popular on Lemmy. I wanted people to think about this article and then voice their thoughts in the comments so that we could talk about it and see what is the rationale behind the popular Lemmy views and such. Also there is a very interesting read here from the father of UBI: https://www.philosophica.ugent.be/article/82556/galley/202370/view/

Dont forget that nothing bad lasts forever, and previous generations went through wars and hardships too.

It certainly feels like madness is in control of the US, but its just greed and lust for power and attention. There is no difference between the undeveloped child that is taking the entire sandbox and these people. Some humans desire nothing more than to take from others until there is nothing left. Maybe its part of their spiritual evolution.

Perhaps there something to learn from their behavior. We get reminded of how not to be towards others. They are a very clear example of souls that feels much more primitive than the animals we have around us.

This too shall pass. :)

Right now, I'm a 2nd year student in university doing Computer Science.

In my later years of high school and first few years in university, my parents (especially my dad), have been very much forcing me to study and getting yelling at me over a single bad mark. While it did give me good marks, it made me so stressed out that one day I just decided that I couldn't handle it anymore and resisted. At the time I also thought that if my parents kept on managing me like that, then I'll never really learn how to be truly independent and take control of myself.

After that, they did leave me alone. However, the next semester after that, I failed a course - something which has never happened before. I told myself that it was just a hard course at the time.

This semester, I have lowered my course load from 5 courses to 3. However, I'm always missing or being late to my classes (either it's because of bad time management, having to rely on the bus, or I just don't bother to show up, or I just woke up too late because of my sleep problems) and have a lot of missing quizzes/assignments. I also have never managed to pay attention during lectures and get myself to study as much as I need to and do my assignments on time (and no, I've found that rewarding myself doesn't really work). I just got my 1st midterm mark back and it was a 50%. I fear that this semester may go the same as the last one.

Over the last few semesters, because my dad has stopped forcing me to wake up at 7 AM, my sleep schedule has gone terrible. For example, yesterday I got to bed at 5 AM and get up at 2 PM and if I need to be at school by 11 AM, I get to bed only at around 2 - 3 AM and wake up at 9 - 10 AM and am usually late. Despite my efforts to force myself to go to bed earlier, I've failed. I believe the only thing that can make me go to bed and wake up on time is if either someone else was forcing me to or I had a completely unavoidable and super important reason to which I'd even be willing to sacrifice sleep for (and most days I just don't feel like that). I've tried melatonin and setting an alarm clock far away from my bed and it didn't really help.

I just feel like I really suck and am ashamed of what I've become. Any advice?

I packed my bags to spend time at my girlfriend’s house to see what it’s like before I move in, so right now, that’s where I am (although she lives next door to my house) and my sister got invited to a sleepover with several eighth grade girls. Apparently they’ll be staying for a few nights but probably just one night.

sorry about crossposting the same thing 17 times, that was my bad. That was definitely spam and I won't do that again! Apologies for possibly making a mess out of anyone's feeds.

Not a very good introduction to myself, so let's start again (without the spam).

Hi, I'm sbird, and I like to make fun projects in my free time. I enjoy programming, 3D printing, and photography. My favourite food is rice. The best Harry Potter book is Prisoner of Azkaban, and I joined the fediverse a few months ago and Lemmy very recently.

My thoughts on the fediverse so far have been positive. Pixelfed has been very nice, and Mastodon has been pretty good too. I love that there's so many different third-party client apps for all three of them!

anyways, I have exams to study for, cheers!

Last night I had a dream of a song I even know its title it's called "Another song to a brighter world", it's about a person telling another person who is stuck on a depressing present moving on to a brighter future, I faintly remembered some the lyrics it goes "or is it you here for me waiting for a brighter future" "you was there I was here", this is all I can remembered it has a lot more lyric than this. PS: it's not between 2 humans interaction, the one that is not depressed is human but the singer's perspective is not, they're a sea creature that look like human (not mermaid) stuck on a human port town by the sea trying to fit in with everyone else.

what I see in a lot of these communities is that they are about the same as any other community in functionality and how people interact, without any additional accessibility. They just happen to have disabled people and such.

Like, I want to find a place that uses tone indicators, or writes posts with alt-text, or even removes ableist language like I've seen in some videos or articles (I'll put a link to that one)

https://youtu.be/aiWARkBCwaA

Do yall have recommendations for that kind of thing?

Remembered there was documentation, and understood it a little better this time around!

TwoLineJoy explainerdecided to try out this idea of tagging posts here with potential community idea to test the waters and put to practice using General as an incubator/launchpad for other communities.

not everyone acts like this, but i’ve seen this enough times to be bothered by it.

if i did nothing to you, you don’t have to treat me like crap because you’re miserable. and i won’t talk to people who blow up and can’t control themselves every time something happens. and then some of the same people wonder why im not speaking to them…
