I had a couple of issues of this 3 decades ago (I think Tower Records in the UK sometimes had it).

A magazine for English-speaking learners of Japanese, using snippets from manga popular in Japan (not just the usual suspects known abroad). Explaining vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, writing systems, culture, politics, history and more, in a fun and memorable way.

The full run from 1990 to 1997 has been uploaded by Mangajin, Inc. to the Internet Archive.

Editor's note from Volume #1, June 1990

The MANGAJIN project has been brewing for quite some time now, but when the Japanese language “boom” started around the end of the 80's, we decided that the time was right to put the plan into action. In order to develop the concept, we talked to a lot of people and did as much research as we could, but it was impossible to do any real quantitative research. Now that MANGAJIN has been launched, we hope to use it as a research instrument to find out more about what type of material you want to see in this publication.

When we select material for publication in MANGAJIN, we consider suitability for language study — we look for a representative mix of slang and polite speech forms, and for sentence structures likely to be useful. We try to pick material which, although “comic” in nature, reflects popular Japanese culture and values, The final criterion, however, is whether the story has entertainment value.

Because so many people seem to be interested in Japanese for business reasons, we selected a business-related story (Hotel, by Shotaro Ishinomori) as our feature manga for this issue, but we're open to suggestions for future issues. There is certainly plenty to choose from in the world of manga—it's estimated that comic books and magazines accounted for more than 30% of all books and magazines published in Japan in 1988. Let us know what you'd like to see.

Although preferences vary, most people agree that manga are one of the few ways that students of Japanese can access “real” colloquial Japanese and get a glimpse of contemporary Japanese pop culture. Because we provide the readings for the Japanese text in English letters, along with translations and notes, you won't have to spend so much time flipping through the kanji dictionary that you lose interest in the story.

1 hope you find your own method of using and enjoying MANGAJIN, and please let us hear from you.

"I'm searching for a manga and I'm hoping someone can help me identify it. A key detail I remember is how the author portrayed the male lead's change in personality after he starts dating the female lead. He was reserved before, but became very affectionate afterward. Crucially, there was a panel showing this transformation side-by-side: him being indifferent to her before, and then acting like an excited, puppy-like boyfriend after. Does anyone know which manga this could be?"

My guesse(s) are: kiss sixth sense but couldn't find the pic.

Chapter 1,087: "Sacks of warships."

Reader request in the cover: Ace uses his fire to heat water for a Capybara bath.

Chapter starts at Marine Base G- 1. Brannew is showing Jango and Fullbody the ruins of 2 huge battleships.

Brannew explains they are "battleship bags" (like "sandbags" but actual "ships"). Garp uses them to practise his punch. Brannew: "And there are 2 ships because one of them was used by Aokjji.

Garp and Aokiji had a special rule: they never used Haki or special abilities when they're puching these ships."

Cut to Hachinosu (the "Pirate Island"), Garp is still fighting Blackbeard Pirates. Garp has thrown San Juan Wolf into the sea (we can't see how Garp did it, we only see that San Juan Wolf is already in the sea).

Blackbeard's men try to help Wolf up since he will die from drowning.

Vasco Shot spits fire at Garp using an attack called "Heavy Drinker: Furnace Flame". Garp blocks the attack using Blackbeard Pirates' beaten bodies as a shield, and then he throws the burning bodies around burning the town. Garp calls this technique "Pirate Fireballs".

We can see that the ship carrying Sword's members and prisoners is already off the coast. Only Garp, Koby and Grus are fighting the entire island by themselves. Grus asks something to Garp, but it seems Garp doesn't hear it.

Grus: "Garp-san... Am I the "future of Marine" too?"

Kuzan gets back up after Garp's "Blue Hole" (the attack from chapter 1,081). Garp tells Koby and Grus to run while he stops the entire pirate army by himself.

Koby sees a woman that is being attacked by a pirate. When he tries to help her, Koby discovers he has been tricked by them, because the woman is a pirate too. Shiryu (in invisible form) appears and is about to stab Koby, but Garp blocks the blade and gest stabbed in his body instead (similar to what happened with Whitebeard and Squard in Marineford). ArsalWise🌷 — Today at 3:13 PM Garp grabs Shiryu and throws him to the ground. Shiryu is injured but laughing. Koby says sorry to Garp, but Garp says Shiryu's aim was to get him from the beginning.

Garp is weakened, so all Blackbeard Pirates continue to attack him. According to Cross Guild, Garp's bounty is worth 3 Crowns (3 Billion Berries). It's the same amount as the Marine Admirals.

A new flashback starts, we see the first time Garp met Kuzan. Chapter doesn't say when it took place, but Garp looks very young (like long before Roger's execution).

Young Kuzan asked Garp to be his disciple, but Garp told Kuzan to go and train with the Marine Instructors instead (maybe Garp talked about Zephyr?). Kuzan refused and tried to imitate Garp by punching the battleships like him. As days gone by Kuzan's punch became stronger and stronger, until the sound of his punch was as loud as Garp's.

Over time, Garp was getting closer to Kuzan. Garp even complained about his family to Kuzan while they ate snacks together.

Garp: "My son became a revolutionary, dammit!! And my grandson said he will become piratel! Like I'd let him!!!" Kuzan looked annoyed to Garp. Kuzan: "What does that have to do with me!!?"

Back to the present. Kuzan covers his hand with a technique called "Ice Glove". Then Garp and Kuzan punch each other's faces with Haki, creating a huge explosion (we can see black lightning from the impact). Both of them are thrown away.

Avalo Pizarro brings two huge arms on from island with his powers and is about to crush Garp's ship.

At the end of the chapter, we see Garp lying on the ground bleeding (we can't see what happened to Kuzan). Garp talks with Koby.

Garp: "Koby, don't panic.. Justice will prevail!!!"

End of the chapter. Next week, Color Spread in One Piece chapter 1,088 to celebrate One Piece 26th Anniversary!!

I'm moving from the [email protected] community, which seems to be focused more on new-chapter announcements than manga discussion and recommendations.

But I wonder if this is actually the goal of this community. Moderators: would it be possible to add some description on the community sidebar? Cheers!
