EDIT: So, I tried a few things, including using a publicly available HTTP proxy list (and using the force IPv4 option). The issue is seemingly well known - and there does not seem to be a good solution. When trying out the proxies, they were also very unreliable, and I found reports of people having their IP blocked again if they changed it. I might look into setting up a small Raspi-like system at home to use at a self-configured proxy that can run without drawing a lot of electricity. That might be able to fool YT better than publicly available proxies, as it would appear as a residential network to them.

But overall, I think this problem might depend on yt-dlp updates and/or YT changing policies, ultimately.

So, at the moment, I have the feature to mirror channels or import from URLs disabled for my PeerTube server (although it should work fine, for platforms other than YT). Trying to import from YT-URLs does result in errors every time, and from my research and bug-hunting, it seems to be a problem with yt-dlp not having necessary cookies and being prompted to log in by the YT bot avoidance systems.

Now, I don't really want to import any credentials from my personal YT account to anything that will ultimately run outside my control, if that is at all avoidable. Does someone here have any experience with other ways to get it running? So far, I haven't found anything myself.

If you're not familiar with GrayJay, it's a cross-platform video app. You can watch and search videos from YouTube (YMMV if you use a VPN), Odyssey, Bitchute, Nebula, Kick, Twitch, pretty much anything you can imagine, and aggregates all your subscriptions and searches into 1 cross-platform feed. And if it's not on there you can create your own plugin. There's a repository here.

PeerTube has been supported since day 1 but previously you could only view videos from the instance you added, so you had to add them all individually. It was updated recently and seems to not be tied to any instances at all. You can view comments but it doesn't seem to support login right now so you won't be able to "like" or leave comments. I've asked them to add this functionality.

For PeerTube you'll probably have to go into the sources and enable it. You'll probably also want to enable SepiaSearch at the bottom (this searches across instances, for those who have opted into search).

I don't really know how to explain the monetization model. There's a $10 lifetime license fee. They're adamant that it's not free (as in beer) but if you don't pay for the license, nothing happens 🤷‍♂️ I paid for it because it's awesome.

You can download from F-Droid (using FUTO repository) or direct from grayjay.app (the app updates itself).

There's also a desktop version, and your license works for both. Although the desktop version is really nice, it's not yet as polished as the mobile one. It also supports syncing your data over your local network.

Found this today, included features that I saw:

• Redirecting from YouTube if the video is also found on PeerTube
• Redirecting to your own instance, when clicking on a video link for a PeerTube video on another instance

Very useful, especially considering you will always get a link to your own instance when using the share function, which isn't ideal for anyone not on your instance.

If you know any other cool tools and addons for PeerTube, feel free to add them here.

EDIT: Yupp, I was just a bit impatient, took a few days but they are indexed properly now. I was confused because other videos that were just hours old were already in the index - but that didn't mean that mine were skipped of course.

So, I've started migrating my old YT content to a Peertube profile on peertube.wtf, you can find it here: https://peertube.wtf/a/wxnzxn

It's not any kind of high-stakes content, mostly old German YouTube Poops from the early 2010s when I was a different person. So I am not all that disappointed that I can't find my own content - but I am confused as to why it doesn't show up.

When I check https://sepiasearch.org/ and look at the instances in their index, Peertube.wtf shows up as available and in the index

But trying to find any of my videos returns no results, even for my amateur game trailer I uploaded days ago - so I doubt it's because of some kind "just wait a bit longer" issue.

Is there something missing? Could it be, that the instance has been (shadow)banned and removed from the index?

Here's hoping it's not at a bad time and can be resolved soon.

A bit OT, but somewhat related: I read on the info page, that it's possible ways to donate to contribute to server costs may happen eventually. Just planting the idea that I would happily give a small amount on liberapay regularily, to honour the work (and money) needed to keep the instance running :)
